Speaker:

Hurray.

2

:

Ghia here.

3

:

I'm this week's host of the

creative, spiritual journey

4

:

podcast, where I talk about.

5

:

Uh, connecting with nature.

6

:

Connecting with Jesus Christ

and our heavenly parents.

7

:

Uh, seasonal living.

8

:

And anything else I've been learning about

on this remarkable journey we call life.

9

:

It's August.

10

:

And I want to talk about walking barefoot.

11

:

About connecting to the

energy of the earth.

12

:

But to get there.

13

:

I want to talk about what I have

chosen to name the August moon.

14

:

Let me start by reading

some of the ancestral names.

15

:

I love to read these each month because

they tell me what other people have

16

:

chosen to associate with the August moon.

17

:

What was important to

them during this time?

18

:

Traditional names for the August.

19

:

Moon are full sturgeon moon.

20

:

Black cherries, moon, corn moon.

21

:

And ricing moon.

22

:

Which is the harvesting of wild rice.

23

:

Obviously August is a time for gathering

food in many ancestral cultures.

24

:

Other August moon names include mountain

shadow, moon, and flying up moon.

25

:

When I read flying up moon,

I had no idea what it meant.

26

:

But it stood out to me because it

sounded like the opposite of what I

27

:

was thinking of naming my August moon.

28

:

I thought flying up might

mean floating, loosen the air.

29

:

Untethered.

30

:

I wasn't really sure.

31

:

When I looked it up, it seemed obvious

that I should have thought about birds.

32

:

The flying up moon is the time

when young birds are ready to

33

:

take the leap and learn to fly.

34

:

Interesting because it still

invokes the opposite of what I was

35

:

thinking of naming my August moon.

36

:

Which has more to do with

keeping my feet firmly on the

37

:

ground, then learning to fly.

38

:

We all know the parable of

the man who built his house on

39

:

the sand and was washed away.

40

:

Versus the man who built his

house on the rock and was able to

41

:

withstand the wind and the rains.

42

:

What does this parable mean?

43

:

We know, don't we to have

the foundation of our lives.

44

:

Be Jesus Christ.

45

:

To be centered in Christ.

46

:

To have a firm foundation where we

base our actions on the commandments

47

:

and the covenants we have made.

48

:

But we are in houses, right?

49

:

We are humans.

50

:

People who move about.

51

:

We are mobile.

52

:

We don't have cement

and rebar foundations.

53

:

Elder Neal a Maxwell said.

54

:

Events and circumstances in the last day.

55

:

Make it imperative for us as members

of the church to become more grounded,

56

:

rooted, established, and settled.

57

:

I like that word grounded.

58

:

Ground seems too big to move.

59

:

Right?

60

:

Solid, substantial.

61

:

Turns out the earliest known use

of the adjective grounded was an

62

:

1848 and was penned by Edmund jest.

63

:

The Bishop of Saulsbury.

64

:

As reference that was 10 years before

queen Elizabeth, the first took the

65

:

throne and 61 years before William

Shakespeare used the word grounded

66

:

in one of his dark lady sonnets.

67

:

Now just because just was the first

one to write the word grounded.

68

:

Does it mean he was the

first one to use it?

69

:

I wish I had been a little bird that

could watch and hear the first person

70

:

who thought to use the word grounded.

71

:

Who thought grounded described

what they were talking about

72

:

or needed in their life?

73

:

What were they thinking?

74

:

What was that conversation about?

75

:

There are so many nuanced

ways to use the word.

76

:

Grounded can mean well,

balanced and sensible.

77

:

Rational reasonable satisfied.

78

:

Uh, emotionally aware and

responsive, firmly fixed, or

79

:

established, deeply rooted.

80

:

Uh, mental and emotionally stable.

81

:

Realistic unpretentious.

82

:

Grounded in reality to have

a basis for belief or action.

83

:

To have a foundation of knowledge.

84

:

We can have common ground, middle

ground, high ground background.

85

:

We can break ground cover

ground, go to ground.

86

:

And we can be grounded.

87

:

It's this big grounded definition

I want to talk about today.

88

:

And I don't mean grounded as in

punished for doing something wrong.

89

:

I mean, literally connected to the ground

or earthing as it's sometimes called.

90

:

So it's summer here in

the Northern hemisphere.

91

:

Unless you live somewhere

really hot, like Phoenix.

92

:

This is the best time to go

outside and actually let your

93

:

feet connect with the earth.

94

:

Which is why I wanted August

to be my grounded moon.

95

:

So what does grounding or earthing mean?

96

:

I'm going to read this directly

from web MD so that you don't

97

:

think I'm making this up.

98

:

And you know, it's a

real legitimate concept.

99

:

This is from the article.

100

:

titled grounding techniques and beliefs.

101

:

It starts off with a couple of questions.

102

:

Quote.

103

:

What is grounding?

104

:

Grounding also known as earthing

is when you stand on the earth

105

:

or have contact with a product

that's grounded into the earth.

106

:

This connects your body to the natural

electrical charge of the earth.

107

:

Transferring electrons into your body.

108

:

Some research shows that soaking up

electrons can lower inflammation, ease,

109

:

stress, and improve, sleep to name a few.

110

:

How does it work?

111

:

The earth is electronically active with

lots of electrons floating on the surface.

112

:

The human body naturally absorbs electrons

from the earth, which brings charges into

113

:

our body that may support our health.

114

:

Historically people were

more connected to the earth.

115

:

They spent more time outdoor with their

feet and bodies directly on the ground.

116

:

But nowadays, most people have

little direct contact with the earth.

117

:

As a result, our bodies pick up positive,

static, electrical charges that can't be

118

:

released unless we connect to the ground.

119

:

Grounding neutralizes those positive

electrical charges by absorbing

120

:

negative electrons to balance you out.

121

:

When connected the electrons, we absorb

work as natural antioxidants that

122

:

neutralize the positively charged free

radicals that can damage our body.

123

:

Exposure to the electrons is

vital for functioning at our best.

124

:

It can improve, sleep, heal, wounds,

and reduce inflammation, linked to a

125

:

variety of health ailments and quote.

126

:

Now the web MD article, didn't

say much about the mental

127

:

effects of grounding, though.

128

:

It did say in one place that some

studies have shown that grounding

129

:

can make people feel less stressed.

130

:

Other websites say grounding reduces

stress and improves emotional regulation.

131

:

Uh, enhances mental clarity and focus.

132

:

And increases emotional resilience.

133

:

Which makes sense, because as explained

grounding, reduces inflammation and we

134

:

can have neuro or brain inflammation.

135

:

Isn't it amazing that just connecting

with the earth can be so helpful.

136

:

I love that about the earth makes you

believe God had a plan when he created it.

137

:

Don't you think?

138

:

He created this physical earth to care

for and support our physical bodies.

139

:

It wasn't a coincidence.

140

:

We are made to be in

contact with the earth.

141

:

This is our home.

142

:

It's kind of crazy that as we

have become more, shall we say

143

:

civilized, As in sleeping in beds,

sitting in chairs and wearing shoes.

144

:

That we have lost our connection

literally to the earth.

145

:

Did you know, we didn't have

rubber shoes until the:

146

:

That's when we truly lost our

connection with the ground.

147

:

Rubber sole shoes are wonderful.

148

:

They are durable, comfortable,

and great for sports.

149

:

They are also incredible insulators.

150

:

And some people claim that wearing

them as one of the most destructive

151

:

things humans have ever created.

152

:

Because of the devastating effect they

have on our physical and emotional health.

153

:

Our bodies are electrical.

154

:

We ground everything electrical

to the earth in order to

155

:

maintain electrical stability.

156

:

The human body is the most

electrical thing in our environment.

157

:

And yet we never really think

about connecting it to the earth.

158

:

We have pain epidemics these days,

chronic pain and inflammation are rampant.

159

:

And along with that, one of the biggest

sources of suffering in this life is

160

:

the experience of being disconnected.

161

:

Our bodies are electrical and we can

ground them by connecting to the earth.

162

:

Now.

163

:

I'm not telling you this because

it's something I think you should do.

164

:

I'm telling you this because

it's something I want to do.

165

:

It's something that I want

to incorporate more into my

166

:

life, into my seasonal routine.

167

:

Thus my grounding moon.

168

:

Proponents of grounding will tell you

that the more you ground, the better.

169

:

And that the effects of

grounding are cumulative.

170

:

So, if you are truly interested

in the effects, You should make

171

:

it a regular part of your life.

172

:

All of which I believe.

173

:

But the reality is it's hard

to spend that much time with

174

:

your bare feet on the ground.

175

:

Now, there are lots of grounding products

that you can use indoors, you plug

176

:

them in and they ground using the same

grounding wire used to ground your outlet.

177

:

There are mats you can put under

your feet or on your chair or bed.

178

:

I have used some of these in the past.

179

:

For three years, I lived in a fifth wheel

insulated from the earth by rubber tires.

180

:

So I made a grounding sheet for my bed,

with a wire that ran out the window

181

:

and attached to a spike in the ground.

182

:

Now to be totally honest.

183

:

I didn't notice any effect in

my body from sleeping grounded.

184

:

But I also don't have

any major health issues.

185

:

If you are interested in seeing

the amazing results that some

186

:

people have had from grounding.

187

:

I'll include a link to a

documentary called the earthing

188

:

movie in the show notes.

189

:

It's an hour and 15 minutes long

it's well-produced and informative.

190

:

But back to my August grounding moon.

191

:

I am much more connected to the

earth where I currently live than

192

:

when I was in the fifth wheel.

193

:

But despite how much time I

spend outdoors, I'm not actually

194

:

indirect contact with the earth

as much as I would like to be.

195

:

We have outdoor carpet to

keep the dust and mud down.

196

:

And I live in the desert,

which is full of pokey things.

197

:

So I always wear my flip-flops.

198

:

But it's time to change that in my life.

199

:

My August moon is to remind

me to take off my shoes, to

200

:

deliberately walk on the earth.

201

:

To connect with it as often as I can.

202

:

To let it ground me to let it heal

me emotionally and physically.

203

:

I love the idea of literally

touching the earth as often as I can.

204

:

And summer seems like

the best time to do this.

205

:

I suppose, ideally I would connect

barefoot with the earth year round.

206

:

But for obvious reasons

that becomes problematic.

207

:

If I feel the need, I may

incorporate some kind of indoor

208

:

grounding mat in my life someday.

209

:

But for now, I just want to

connect with the earth as

210

:

often as practically possible.

211

:

And the reason for this is that

more than the health benefits

212

:

I can gain from the earth.

213

:

I want the feeling of

connecting to the earth.

214

:

I want to touch it, perhaps for the

same reason I would hug a friend.

215

:

For the comfort for the expression of

love to connect and to be connected.

216

:

I believe the earth has a spirit.

217

:

Doctrine and covenants

88, 25 through 26 says.

218

:

And again, fairly I say unto

you, the earth abideth, the

219

:

law of the celestial kingdom.

220

:

For it.

221

:

Filleth the measure of its creation.

222

:

And transgressed this, not the law.

223

:

Wherefore it shall be sanctified.

224

:

Yay.

225

:

Not withstanding it shall die.

226

:

It shall be quick and again, until abide

the power by which it was quickened

227

:

and the righteous shall inherit it.

228

:

Take that for what you will.

229

:

I am no authority, but in my simple mind,

it means that the earth has a spirit.

230

:

That it will live and die the way we do

and will ultimately be Celeste Jaliza.

231

:

So I believe that connecting

with the earth is my birthright.

232

:

This is my home.

233

:

This is where I want to live.

234

:

Not only for time, but

also for all eternity.

235

:

Hm.

236

:

Touching the earth creating a

relationship sharing electrons.

237

:

This is the meaning of

my August grounding moon.

238

:

I hope you have enjoyed this

week's episode of the creative,

239

:

spiritual journey podcast.

240

:

I am so grateful you are here.

241

:

And thank you for sharing this

podcast with a friend, Judy

242

:

and I are greatly appreciative.

243

:

And I hope you will consider for

yourself if staying close to the

244

:

earth, touching it deliberately

grounding will comfort your soul.

245

:

Nama stay.

About the Podcast

Creative Spiritual Journey
one small, deliberate step at a time
We are all on a journey—a journey home to our heavenly parents. Any experienced traveler knows there are days you laugh and days you cry.

We aren’t here to tell you how to live—we are here to share how we live—how we survive, thrive, and even find joy!

The journey gets messy with rainstorms and sleepless flights but the hard times—the miserable times—those make the best stories.

And the vistas, the sunsets, the little birds outside the window—those are the reminders that God is in the details, he is aware of us, he has trod the path before.

The Creative Spiritual Journey Podcast is hosted by Judy and Ghia Cooley—two sisters in their wisdom years—who love the savior and are dedicated to making this journey one small, deliberate step at a time.
