Speaker:

Welcome friends to the Creative

Spiritual Journey where GUI and I

2

:

walk with you for just a moment and

share with you the things of our soul.

3

:

Together we're discovering how to

create beauty and joy by connecting

4

:

with nature and our heavenly parents,

and you, our fellow travelers.

5

:

We desire to tune our ears to hear the

whisperings of the spirit and share it

6

:

with you in meditations and celebrations.

7

:

Thanks for joining us on the Trail.

8

:

Today is the first episode for

season three, episode number 93.

9

:

Can you believe it?

10

:

Woo.

11

:

Let's celebrate.

12

:

And today is also my 62nd

birthday, and what begins for me

13

:

another journey around the sun.

14

:

If you've been with us for season

one and two, we hope that you have

15

:

found some joy in the journey.

16

:

The first two seasons

I was in South Africa.

17

:

I'm back home now still navigating

that T Trail of Life just on

18

:

the other side of the world.

19

:

you know how it is to begin a new journey.

20

:

It takes some preparation, a clear

destination, and of course courage to take

21

:

that first step onto the path forward.

22

:

So being my birthday, I have thought

back on birthdays throughout my life.

23

:

One fond memory.

24

:

I guess it was maybe five, and having a

real fun birthday party with my friends.

25

:

I remember when it came time for

opening the gifts, did you have that

26

:

tradition of standing behind the

birthday girl and saying, heavy, heavy.

27

:

Hang over thy poor head.

28

:

What do you wish this person

with the bump on the head, you

29

:

bump their head with a gift.

30

:

I asked Gia if she ever heard

of this, and she said she had

31

:

never heard of such a thing.

32

:

I remember so vividly everyone saying,

oh, A wish for her a pony, a wish for her.

33

:

A pony.

34

:

Can you imagine if they had all gone home

with a pony in our suburban backyards?

35

:

We had no idea how to care for a pony.

36

:

Maybe that's where the old saying,

careful what you wish for comes from.

37

:

When I was a little girl,

wishing was serious business.

38

:

Remember when you were about to

blow out your birthday candles on

39

:

your birthday cake and everyone

saying, make a wish, but don't tell

40

:

us because then it won't come true.

41

:

So our wishes then became

secrets of our Heart.

42

:

I am still a wisher.

43

:

How about you?

44

:

When I drive over railroad tracks,

blow dandelion seeds, see a shooting

45

:

star or even see the numbers.

46

:

11.

47

:

11.

48

:

I make a wish and My wishes are all the

same every time, and I'm not going to tell

49

:

you because then they won't come true.

50

:

Like I said, wishes are serious.

51

:

Business.

52

:

Now, this word hangover.

53

:

Hangover.

54

:

I poor head.

55

:

In the older English hangover didn't mean

a hangover from drinking too much alcohol.

56

:

It referred to a lingering ache,

something left hanging over a

57

:

physical heaviness or soreness.

58

:

So heavy, heavy hangover

likely meant a heavy aching.

59

:

Of your heart.

60

:

Um, these were also echoes of

healing charms, some folklorist,

61

:

is that how you say that word?

62

:

Folklorist believe it resembled

medieval healing rhymes or charms

63

:

where words are spoken rhythmically

while placing hands on the head

64

:

I like the idea of granting wishes like

a fairy godmother or a genie for those

65

:

heavy hangovers weighing over our hearts.

66

:

What would you wish for today?

67

:

Surely not a pony, but maybe some

peace of mind concerning a loved

68

:

one or strength, maybe healing.

69

:

I know some friends in South Africa

that would wish for employment.

70

:

I know some amazing single adults

who wish for a husband or a wife,

71

:

and who hasn't wished to lose those

stubborn 10 or more extra pounds.

72

:

So what miracle are you wishing for?

73

:

This got me to thinking about how fun

it could be to be my five-year-old Judy

74

:

who believed with all my heart that

wishes come true, and to give birthday

75

:

wishes to you today on this podcast.

76

:

Before I wave my magic wand though,

let me tell you one more story.

77

:

Years ago while on a hike, I made some

wish, I can't remember what it was.

78

:

It was probably wishing I had

that pony to carry my pack.

79

:

But I caught myself saying, if wishes

were fishes, we'd have a fish fry.

80

:

This is what my dad would cleverly say

to us girls when we tell him our latest.

81

:

I wish I had.

82

:

It was his way of telling us don't count

on it, because if wishing were enough

83

:

to bring something about, then everyone

would have everything they needed.

84

:

Plenty for a fish fry.

85

:

As a mom, I sometimes would say that to

our children's wishes, but on that hike

86

:

I realized My childish wishes for things.

87

:

Where things just for me, but wishes that

are truly the desires of our heart, I

88

:

believe God wants us to have righteous

desires of our hearts, and in fact, I

89

:

think His Holy Spirit plant some there.

90

:

I know that the Lord has said

that we will be judged by the

91

:

desires of our heart and our works.

92

:

And so wish big, but yet get to work

because there's a lot of fishing to do.

93

:

So I rode a rebuttal hiking that

day for my dad and lost wishes,

94

:

and it goes something like this.

95

:

If wishes were Fisht, I'd jump in

and swim and catch as many as I can,

96

:

and I toss 'em on shore where the

hungry man stands, and together we'd

97

:

feast on delicious fishes and more.

98

:

Okay.

99

:

I'm no Dr.

100

:

Seuss, wishes are the righteous

desires of our hearts and when aligned

101

:

with faith, and I'm not talking

about wishing for worldly riches or

102

:

ponies, but really wishing with faith.

103

:

Having faith in the wish giver, Jesus

Christ, in heartfelt prayers for

104

:

miracles, I believe our Father in

heaven is a God of miracles and wishes.

105

:

This may seem like a silly question,

but if our Heavenly Father is going

106

:

to give you a birthday wish on your

head for those heavy, heavy hangovers,

107

:

those things weighing heavy on your

mind, what do you think it would be?

108

:

I'm guessing it would be exactly

what is best for eternal.

109

:

Progression, something to help you

grow and become your best divine self.

110

:

In the book, A Mormon, a man

named Alma tells us of his wish.

111

:

In Alma 29, he says, oh, that I were an

angel and could have the wish of my heart.

112

:

He longs to cry, repentance to

the people, not for his glory, but

113

:

so that there might not be more

sorrow upon the face of the earth.

114

:

Now that sounds like a

pretty, pretty awesome wish.

115

:

It's one I wish for.

116

:

Alma also says that he sins

in his wish that he needs to

117

:

be content with what he has.

118

:

That's interesting, isn't it?

119

:

Gratitude makes me think

of another fish story.

120

:

When the savior took two fish and

five loafs of bread, blessed it and

121

:

gave thanks to his father, then he

fed the thousands till they were

122

:

filled and he had leftovers tos spare.

123

:

That is the power of wishes and prayer.

124

:

And gratitude, that

simple childhood rhyme.

125

:

what would you wish this person

with a bump on the head becomes

126

:

Something deeper through Alma.

127

:

A wish shaped by compassion, a desire

to heal, worn lift, and bless our

128

:

loved ones and our family and friends.

129

:

A reminder that righteous wishes are

less about ourselves and more about.

130

:

Easing the burdens of others.

131

:

Alma is also offering us a

gentle lesson, a reminder.

132

:

He teaches that.

133

:

Righteous wishes are welcomed, even

given to us by God to seek him.

134

:

And when we have gratitude and are content

with what we have right in our hands, this

135

:

is where the magic of wishing begins and

the multiplying of the fishes we can wish

136

:

for more light in the world while thanking

God for the light already entrusted to us.

137

:

Many times I've read Alma 29.

138

:

And I think to myself that

God did give him his wish.

139

:

with missionary work and with the

Book of Mormon, he has received

140

:

his wish, his desire of his heart.

141

:

Think about it.

142

:

The Book of Mormon has been translated

in over 150 languages, taught and shout

143

:

from the rooftops by hundreds of thousands

of missionaries, sharing the desire of

144

:

Alma's heart to preach repentance, and

to bring joy, the joy of Christ to heal

145

:

hearts, to bring some light to the world.

146

:

President Thomas s Monson taught

that to fulfill your divine role.

147

:

We need to decide to be a little better

each day rather than just wishing for it.

148

:

That sounds like wishes

require some work and prayer.

149

:

So how do we distinguish between

wishing and prayer, or even better,

150

:

how can we prayerfully wish?

151

:

Wishing is sometimes described

as a line cast from the present

152

:

into an uncertain future.

153

:

much like fishing and wishing, but

prayerfully offering up the desires of

154

:

our heart is more of a conversation with

our lovingly heavenly father, where we

155

:

seek to find out what God wants for us

rather than just telling him what we want.

156

:

Prayerful, wishing takes faith.

157

:

It takes saying, thy will, oh Lord.

158

:

Ah.

159

:

And that's hard sometimes And trust

the wish that he grants for us is

160

:

better than what we can imagine.

161

:

We think we want the pony when his will

for us is to become something grander.

162

:

Even more than a purebred

Kentucky Derby winner.

163

:

His wish for us is eternal life

and joy to receive all that he has.

164

:

Yay much more.

165

:

But we must first prove

ourselves with the small stuff.

166

:

How are we at handling our agency?

167

:

Our day-to-day choices.

168

:

How are we with our relationships?

169

:

Are we loving one another or

there's still some contention?

170

:

How are we caught up in the

vain things of the world?

171

:

Are we distracted from the more important

matter or are we following him or the

172

:

world with big wishes and desires?

173

:

Comes big responsibility.

174

:

Okay, are you ready

for my birthday wishes?

175

:

Swish.

176

:

Swish.

177

:

That's my my fairy godmother wand.

178

:

I wish for you to delight

in your body and your life.

179

:

See it for the miraculous

creation that it is.

180

:

No matter your age, I wish

for you to have a good belly

181

:

laugh, and so what if it shakes?

182

:

Maybe you will break out in dance.

183

:

Your body rejoices in

movement, so shake your booty.

184

:

I wish for you swish.

185

:

Wish to find wonderment and to step

outdoors and experience the world

186

:

created for you to feel God's love.

187

:

When's the last time you rolled

in the grass or picked a wild

188

:

flower or found a heart rock?

189

:

Okay, it's winter here, so you may

have to bundle up no matter what The

190

:

season there is beauty to be found.

191

:

I wish for you swish, wish for you a

special moment of stillness with no hurry

192

:

to hear all the magical sounds of life.

193

:

Feel the breeze, soak in the sun.

194

:

You can do this anywhere,

even in the chaos.

195

:

Simply stand still and be

quiet and find the words.

196

:

Thank you in your heart, and

listen to what echoes back.

197

:

I wish for you swish wish to have

the courage to say, I am sorry, and I

198

:

forgive you to an old heartache in the

past to an enemy so you can release

199

:

it back to the past where it belongs.

200

:

and hopefully you will feel your soul

take flight because it will be so light.

201

:

And last of all, swish swish.

202

:

I wish for you to have that

childlike faith and know

203

:

that Jesus knows your heart.

204

:

He's aware of your wishes and your

heavy, heavy hanging over your heart,

205

:

and all that seems unfair in this life.

206

:

And all those broken and lost wishes

can be made right in the grace of

207

:

Jesus Christ and God's love for you.

208

:

I love you.

209

:

Delight in the Lord and he will

give you the desires of your heart.

210

:

Reread that in Psalms 37.

211

:

Four, what are the desires of your heart?

212

:

What are your wishes?

213

:

Your heart's desires equals

everything you secretly dream about.

214

:

Visualize or imagine our prophet,

president Oaks invited us.

215

:

he said, I hope each of us will

search our hearts to determine

216

:

what we really desire and how we

rank our most important desires.

217

:

Desires, dictate our priorities.

218

:

Priorities, shape our choices and choices,

determine our actions, the desires

219

:

we act on, determine our changing,

our achieving, and our becoming.

220

:

So happy birthday wishes, my friends, my

wish is that you return to the trail with

221

:

me next week, where you will discover a

wishy meditation created just for you.

222

:

And tell then, and the words of

Mark Twain I found on my morning

223

:

celestial seasoning tea box quote.

224

:

To get the full value of joy, you

must have someone to divide it with.

225

:

If this episode brought you joy, I invite

you to like, share or leave a rating.

226

:

It's one of the simplest ways to

help others find us on the trail

227

:

So they can walk with us also.

228

:

Thank you for sharing my birthday with me.

229

:

I'll see you on the trail.

About the Podcast

Creative Spiritual Journey
one small, deliberate step at a time
We are all on a journey—a journey home to our heavenly parents. Any experienced traveler knows there are days you laugh and days you cry.

We aren’t here to tell you how to live—we are here to share how we live—how we survive, thrive, and even find joy!

The journey gets messy with rainstorms and sleepless flights but the hard times—the miserable times—those make the best stories.

And the vistas, the sunsets, the little birds outside the window—those are the reminders that God is in the details, he is aware of us, he has trod the path before.

The Creative Spiritual Journey Podcast is hosted by Judy and Ghia Cooley—two sisters in their wisdom years—who love the savior and are dedicated to making this journey one small, deliberate step at a time.
