The Winter Sun

Ghia—Do you love the Winter Sun? Jesus Christ “is in the sun, and the light of the sun, and the power thereof by which it was made.” And believe it or not, the sun is actually good for us.

Speaker:

Ghia here.

2

:

Welcome to the second season of the

creative, spiritual journey podcast.

3

:

Where Judy and I talk about

those things that bring us joy.

4

:

For me.

5

:

I find joy connecting with nature.

6

:

Connecting with Jesus Christ

and our heavenly parents.

7

:

Seasonal living and all the bits of magic

and wonder I come across while navigating

8

:

this remarkable journey we call life.

9

:

Here in the Northern hemisphere, we

are in the deep, dark heart of winter.

10

:

Do you love it?

11

:

I do.

12

:

I love to wear sweaters and scarves.

13

:

I love sleeping under thick blankets.

14

:

I love it.

15

:

When I think it's really late and

realize it's only six 30 in the evening.

16

:

Okay.

17

:

I don't love driving in the snow and

I hate it when I'm in a hurry and I

18

:

have to stop and scrape the windshield.

19

:

But here's, what's crazy.

20

:

I know it's dark and cold, but

what else is happening outside?

21

:

Every day, it's getting a

little bit lighter and lighter.

22

:

The winter sun is hanging in

the sky for just another minute.

23

:

That is something everyone has got

to love about this time of year.

24

:

The winter sun.

25

:

Did you know that there is a name

for the son in the book of Abraham?

26

:

It's shine.

27

:

Ha.

28

:

I love that.

29

:

I love having a name for the sun.

30

:

I tried to look up the correct

pronunciation, but the ones I found

31

:

all sounded a little different.

32

:

So I'm going with the one I like best.

33

:

If I understand this correctly,

the Egyptian cartouche for Shinhan.

34

:

Is the symbol of the sun's orbit.

35

:

And a correlates with the

words forever or eternity.

36

:

This reminds me of doctrine and covenants

88, which says referring to Jesus Christ.

37

:

He is in the sun and the light

of the sun and the power there

38

:

of, by which it was made.

39

:

Jesus Christ is my shine.

40

:

Huh?

41

:

My son, my light, my eternity.

42

:

And third Nifae referring to Jesus Christ.

43

:

It says his countenance

did smile upon them.

44

:

I think of this scripture

when I get a chance to sit for

45

:

a moment in the winter sun.

46

:

It feels to me like a smile from God.

47

:

It's warm.

48

:

It's safe.

49

:

It's loving.

50

:

Contrast this with the summer sun, which

I think is often trying to kill me.

51

:

Oh, the winter sun.

52

:

It's my smile from God.

53

:

My Jesus Christ.

54

:

I love to feel that he

is smiling down on me.

55

:

It's just like Alma said, All

things to note, there is a God.

56

:

The winter sun denotes.

57

:

There is a God.

58

:

Do you think I'm crazy?

59

:

Or can you see this idea?

60

:

Of course we can see God in any season,

but it really rings true to me in winter.

61

:

Because in the fall we drop into

this time of death and decay.

62

:

But what happens right after death?

63

:

The light returns, life returns.

64

:

Sounds almost like resurrection.

65

:

Don't you think?

66

:

And of course, as I've talked

about, the moon does the same thing.

67

:

It's getting smaller and smaller

until all the light is gone.

68

:

And then what?

69

:

Of course it gets lighter again.

70

:

Do you think this is a coincidence?

71

:

Did God just happened to

design our earth this way.

72

:

That the light diminishes to

nothing and then comes back.

73

:

I believe all things to

note, there is a God.

74

:

Our earth was designed

this way for a reason.

75

:

Over and over again, throughout

our lives, the same idea of death

76

:

and rebirth is taught to us.

77

:

Why is this important?

78

:

here's an idea.

79

:

In Isaiah 30, it says in returning

and rest, ye shall be saved.

80

:

In quietness and in confidence

shall be your strength.

81

:

So there is this time for returning

and resting in him in Jesus Christ.

82

:

A time that will save us and fill

us with confidence and strength.

83

:

Is that what winter and the dark

of night and the new moon, and

84

:

even the circular nature of our

breath are here to remind us about.

85

:

Do these cycles teach us to look for and

find strength, quietness, and rest in him.

86

:

I don't know about you,

but I believe they do.

87

:

And that is part of their purpose.

88

:

So all this said, I want to talk about

the sun and light for a few minutes.

89

:

Mostly in our society these

days, we have been taught to

90

:

think of sun as a bad thing.

91

:

We are told over and over to

cover up, put on sunscreen.

92

:

So the sun doesn't give us cancer.

93

:

What if I told you this

idea, isn't completely true.

94

:

What if I told you the sun is good for us?

95

:

And that more than that, it is

actually necessary for our health, our

96

:

sleep and our overall body function.

97

:

Would you freak out and get upset?

98

:

I wouldn't blame you.

99

:

I listened to an episode of the

natural state podcast by Dr.

100

:

Anthony Gustin, where he said that

of all the things he has ever posted.

101

:

This topic of the sun being

good for us, brought up more

102

:

controversial than anything else.

103

:

His listeners got truly

upset with this idea.

104

:

So if this concept is new to you,

if it goes against everything

105

:

you ever been taught that's okay.

106

:

Just hear me out, file it in your memory.

107

:

And if you ever hear anything more

about it in the future, you can

108

:

say, yeah, I heard something about

that once before, and maybe at that

109

:

time you will be more interested.

110

:

Now don't get me wrong.

111

:

I don't want anyone to go out in the

sun and let their skin get burned.

112

:

Burning is bad.

113

:

Burning will cause cancer.

114

:

But staying out of the sun or

smothering ourselves in sunscreen

115

:

is not the best way to live either.

116

:

Ideally, we would be outside

every day, getting a little bit

117

:

of sun at a time until what is

called a sun callus develops.

118

:

Have you ever heard of a sun callous?

119

:

It's what experts are calling a suntan.

120

:

When we slowly get out into the sun, our

skin is adapted to sun exposure and we can

121

:

take more and more sun without burning.

122

:

Here are a few things that getting

sunlight on our skin can do for us.

123

:

It helps with daytime alertness and focus.

124

:

It regulates our circadian rhythm,

which plays a role in physiological

125

:

function, including hormone regulation.

126

:

sunlight helps us develop a consistent

sleep wake cycle, leading to better rest.

127

:

And sunlight enhances the

health of our mitochondria.

128

:

Which may reduce the

risk of chronic disease.

129

:

Without getting sun.

130

:

All of these natural health

benefits are inhibited.

131

:

That's why the sun is so important.

132

:

And then there's another thing.

133

:

Have you ever heard of red light therapy?

134

:

It's very popular in

alternative medicine circles.

135

:

Red light therapy is said to help

with skin conditions, pain management,

136

:

joint mobility, brain function,

weight loss, and the list goes on.

137

:

I've never tried red light

therapy myself, but I have friends

138

:

that have, and they love it.

139

:

The bummer is that red light

devices run from $150 for a device.

140

:

The size of a hairbrush.

141

:

All the way up to $18,000

for a red light bed.

142

:

But here's, what's really cool.

143

:

The red glow of sunlight that

occurs at sunrise and sunset is

144

:

a free form of red light therapy.

145

:

All you have to do is go outside.

146

:

Even if it's cloudy.

147

:

The evenings are great.

148

:

And I've heard that if your

shadow is longer than you, it's

149

:

the right time to be outside.

150

:

But sunrise seems to

be the most impactful.

151

:

It has said that this morning light

starts a beneficial hormone cascade.

152

:

Do you like getting a burly?

153

:

It's not my favorite thing, but I

have to admit this idea of getting

154

:

free red light therapy is giving

me a little extra motivation.

155

:

Either way sunrise or sunset.

156

:

Aim for getting a minimum of 10 minutes

outside during these golden hours.

157

:

Unfortunately, you can't be behind

glass or even have contacts in.

158

:

'cause it's your eyes that

take in this red light.

159

:

Isn't that cool eyes aren't just

for seeing they take in light,

160

:

which can literally keep us healthy.

161

:

Eyes are so amazing.

162

:

I remember hearing once that Darwin

had trouble rectifying his theory

163

:

of evolution when it came to eyes.

164

:

He couldn't come up with an obvious

explanation for why eyes would develop.

165

:

Hmm.

166

:

Interesting.

167

:

But listen to this scripture.

168

:

This has doctrine and covenants 88, 11.

169

:

And the light, which shyness.

170

:

Which give it you light is through

him who enlightened with your eyes.

171

:

Which is the same light that

quickened with your understanding.

172

:

Isn't that interesting.

173

:

Jesus Christ enlightens our eyes.

174

:

I know this could just be a metaphor.

175

:

But when you realize the part eyes

play in taking in light and keeping

176

:

our bodies healthy, it's hard

not to take the scripture more.

177

:

Literally.

178

:

It's like God planned it.

179

:

He designed our bodies to

take in and absorb light.

180

:

Now I need to tell you one more

thing about light and our bodies

181

:

that I think is fascinating.

182

:

Scientists developing biophoton

research have been able to

183

:

detect that after we die.

184

:

And before rigor, mortis sets in.

185

:

During this time.

186

:

Uh, our cells actually leak

extremely low frequency, ultraviolet

187

:

light, which can being measured.

188

:

What.

189

:

Ourselves leak light.

190

:

That is so cool.

191

:

Okay, not cool that we die, but that

there is light in ourselves in the

192

:

first place that they can even leak it.

193

:

Right.

194

:

That's the wonder and splendor of light.

195

:

That's our son.

196

:

That's the light of Christ,

the light that given life.

197

:

I want to end with one more thought.

198

:

I have a friend who is a photographer.

199

:

And she was explaining how one of the

best times for a photo shoot is right

200

:

at sunset because of how beautiful

the light is during this time of day.

201

:

And she went on to talk about

how so many people believe we are

202

:

living in an ever darkening world.

203

:

But she pointed out that before

it gets truly dark, there

204

:

is this magical golden hour.

205

:

I assert that we are

living in that golden hour.

206

:

And just like, I need to have my

eyes open and unobscured to absorb

207

:

the infrared light of the sunset.

208

:

If I am watching, if my eyes are open.

209

:

I will see the light of

Christ, even as the rest of

210

:

the world, sinks into darkness.

211

:

Elder Who said.

212

:

The Lord sends us a Ray of light

and then another and another, those

213

:

rays of light are continuously

being poured down on us and quote.

214

:

So there you go.

215

:

Well, I'm enjoying a

few more months of cold.

216

:

I plan to bask in the smiling

light of the winter sun.

217

:

And I hope you will as well.

218

:

Judy, and I know your time is precious.

219

:

And that you have many choices.

220

:

We love that you have chosen to

walk with us for a few minutes.

221

:

As we talk about the joy we've experienced

while navigating this journey of life.

222

:

If you like this podcast, the

biggest things you can offer

223

:

is to share it with a friend.

224

:

And remember.

225

:

To bask in the winter sun is

to bask in the light of Christ.

226

:

Nama stay.

About the Podcast

Creative Spiritual Journey
one small, deliberate step at a time
We are all on a journey—a journey home to our heavenly parents. Any experienced traveler knows there are days you laugh and days you cry.

We aren’t here to tell you how to live—we are here to share how we live—how we survive, thrive, and even find joy!

The journey gets messy with rainstorms and sleepless flights but the hard times—the miserable times—those make the best stories.

And the vistas, the sunsets, the little birds outside the window—those are the reminders that God is in the details, he is aware of us, he has trod the path before.

The Creative Spiritual Journey Podcast is hosted by Judy and Ghia Cooley—two sisters in their wisdom years—who love the savior and are dedicated to making this journey one small, deliberate step at a time.
