Speaker:

So, Bona, my friends, you are listening

to the Creative Spiritual Journey Podcast,

2

:

Small Steps, where we give you small

steps to help you walk deliberately

3

:

with Christ along your journey.

4

:

I'm Judy Cooley.

5

:

I'll be your host for this episode.

6

:

Thanks for joining me here in South

Africa, where I'm serving a mission for

7

:

the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day

Saints with my companion, Elder Cooley.

8

:

I want to share.

9

:

The importance of our light.

10

:

Each one of us came to earth

with the light of Christ.

11

:

And it's up to us to

keep it burning bright.

12

:

So that others can see and follow.

13

:

I love to ask.

14

:

members of the church.

15

:

what is their story?

16

:

How did they become members of the church

of Jesus Christ of latter day saints?

17

:

And I have found a common thread.

18

:

They saw the light.

19

:

Of others.

20

:

They saw the light of a person.

21

:

That attracted them And they wanted to

know who they were, where they were going.

22

:

And Whatever this is, I'm noticing.

23

:

How can I have.

24

:

That.

25

:

In my life.

26

:

I'm going to share with you a story.

27

:

Uh, one of my very first

friends here, sister Kamala.

28

:

but first I want to.

29

:

Tell you about the smile experiment.

30

:

The smile experiment is that

you simply smile at everyone you

31

:

meet and you see what happens.

32

:

I began by smiling in the

mirror in the morning.

33

:

I smile in my prayers.

34

:

And I make it a habit.

35

:

To smile.

36

:

the majority of the time, when you

smile at someone, they will smile back.

37

:

so did you know what

happens when you smile.

38

:

there is actually a research done on this?

39

:

There is a happiness Institute.

40

:

I mean, who doesn't want to go there?

41

:

And they.

42

:

Have found that smiling sets

off fireworks in the brain.

43

:

It sends this message to the brain

that are good for your health and

44

:

happiness, because it releases.

45

:

Neuro-transmitters including dopamine,

serotonin endorphins that reduce

46

:

stress and other negative emotions.

47

:

Such as frustration and anger and

also boost your positive emotions.

48

:

Such as happiness.

49

:

So when you smile.

50

:

Something happens to the person

you're smiling at the neurons

51

:

in their brain respond, with

what is called Mirror neurons.

52

:

Which means they copy the emotions

they see, and that is why happiness.

53

:

Can be contagious.

54

:

I believe if everyone smiled

more, we would live in a happier,

55

:

kinder, and more connected world.

56

:

Did you know the scriptures?

57

:

Talk about smiles.

58

:

In the book of Mormon.

59

:

In.

60

:

35 19.

61

:

Verse.

62

:

25.

63

:

We read that Christ is

praying with the people.

64

:

And his countenance did smile upon them.

65

:

And the light of his

countenance did shine upon them.

66

:

Can you imagine what the smile and

the light of Christ would be like?

67

:

Now that would be something to mirror.

68

:

We smile.

69

:

Sent off those fireworks in our brain,

And we shine that divinely inherited

70

:

light of Christ that is within us.

71

:

And it is contagious.

72

:

So, let me share with you.

73

:

sister Kamala.

74

:

she is so delightful.

75

:

Okay, I'm with Sister Kamalo, Bonnie,

she's one of the first friends on my

76

:

mission, and I'm just so, I just love you.

77

:

I hope you know that.

78

:

I know.

79

:

I do too.

80

:

You have such a light to you.

81

:

The first time we came to your home,

the missionaries dug up a garden area,

82

:

and You cooked them an amazing lunch.

83

:

You have this big heart.

84

:

so I'd love to hear your conversion story.

85

:

So, how I came to know the

church, I was searching.

86

:

I was searching.

87

:

But I was tired of searching and I

was at a point in my life where I

88

:

had just given it to Heavenly Father

to show me the church because I had

89

:

been to so many different churches

and I was disappointed and I thought

90

:

I can't do this on my, on my own.

91

:

And so every day when I went to

bed, I said a prayer and I asked

92

:

him to show me the right church.

93

:

Because I understood that he had witnessed

all the heartache that I had felt or

94

:

all the disappointments that I had

faced as I go through other churches.

95

:

And so I said the same prayer

every day, every day, every

96

:

day I said the same prayer.

97

:

And then one day, I saw this lady, she

looked pretty good for someone her age.

98

:

In my community, when you are older,

you have to dress a certain type.

99

:

Or people that go to other churches,

they go, they wear these uniforms.

100

:

And so she didn't wear a uniform,

and she didn't wear a duke

101

:

or dress like a certain gogo.

102

:

I just loved her energy.

103

:

And every Sunday I noticed this gogo.

104

:

And I got curious of where she was going.

105

:

And every time I would want to

say this everyday prayer of mine,

106

:

suddenly I couldn't utter the word.

107

:

I had this level of guilt and every

time I wanted to say the words, I

108

:

couldn't say the words because now I

knew that heavenly father knows that I

109

:

say I've been to all the churches, but

I haven't been to this woman's church.

110

:

I tried to ignore it because

I was used to having Sundays

111

:

to myself, but I felt guilty.

112

:

I, for some reason, I thought, And me

having been to all the churches, gave me a

113

:

pass for not keeping the Sabbath day holy,

which I didn't know was a Sabbath day holy

114

:

at the time, but I thought it gave me a

pass that having a father understands,

115

:

but suddenly I felt this guilt.

116

:

And then one day I woke up and

I woke up late on this day.

117

:

She had already passed.

118

:

I assumed, and I quickly prepared the kids

and my husband drove me to Where they met.

119

:

And so, I went into the first door that

I saw, and when I went in there, the only

120

:

available chair was at the front, and as

I looked back, there was the woman there.

121

:

And, The missionaries were there.

122

:

I had seen the missionaries before, but

I didn't know they were missionaries.

123

:

I thought they were some chemical

workers because I had seen them

124

:

pushing some lady in a wheelchair.

125

:

I thought maybe they were

volunteers of some sort.

126

:

So they were missionaries.

127

:

And it was a fast and testimony Sunday.

128

:

Oh wow.

129

:

Yes.

130

:

Everyone was bearing their testimonies.

131

:

Although I didn't understand

everyone was saying the church is

132

:

true, which I thought was bizarre.

133

:

But.

134

:

Also, there were, there were girls

and boys, young girls and boys.

135

:

And what they said, although it

didn't make sense to me, but I felt a

136

:

connection to what they were saying.

137

:

And as much as I wanted to rush out,

as soon as I saw faces that I couldn't

138

:

recognize, especially the missionaries,

I thought to myself, you know what?

139

:

I am not coming here next week.

140

:

But as soon as I heard those girls spread

their testimonies, and the missionaries

141

:

came to me afterwards, they introduced

themselves and they asked me who I was,

142

:

and they told me there was going to be

another class, and invited me to stay.

143

:

And I stayed.

144

:

And after church, They offered to walk

me back home with the kids and I allowed

145

:

them to, and they met my husband and

they asked to come and visit us and we

146

:

did allow them to come and visit us and

that was the beginning of my journey.

147

:

so you've been a member for how long?

148

:

I think for thirteen.

149

:

years now.

150

:

And you've been to the temple.

151

:

And it all started with this go go.

152

:

Yes.

153

:

That walked by your house, that had

a light to her and a difference,

154

:

something that caught your eye.

155

:

Yes.

156

:

And you wanted to know,

where is she going?

157

:

Yes.

158

:

What makes her different?

159

:

I couldn't ignore the

light that she carried.

160

:

I couldn't.

161

:

I love that.

162

:

Thank you.

163

:

Okay.

164

:

Now, can you see what I mean?

165

:

She is.

166

:

Delightful.

167

:

Thank you to.

168

:

Bonnie Kamala for Opening

up her heart and her home.

169

:

To share her story and I am

so grateful for that Gogo.

170

:

Which is Zula for grandma.

171

:

That go go.

172

:

That walked by her home.

173

:

Two words, the church.

174

:

Shining her light.

175

:

The savior said, let your light

so shine before man, that they may

176

:

see your good works and glorify

your father, which is in heaven.

177

:

Opportunities to shine are limitless.

178

:

They're all around you.

179

:

My friend, we can be a

source of light to the world.

180

:

Just has turning on a light switch

in the dark room will fill the

181

:

room with light being example.

182

:

Of righteousness being

an example of the savior.

183

:

Can help light up and

increasingly dark world.

184

:

So I invite you.

185

:

to try the smile experiment.

186

:

Go ahead.

187

:

Show off your shine.

188

:

It's so simple, smile, shine.

189

:

That light that you were born with.

190

:

Because you just never

know who's watching.

191

:

B.

192

:

An example of the light of Christ.

193

:

And I promise you just like we

read in doctrine covenants 50, 24.

194

:

That, which is a God is light.

195

:

And he, that receives light and continue

with in God receive with more light.

196

:

And that light grows brighter and

brighter until the perfect day.

197

:

It begins with a smile.

198

:

And if you know, someone that

needs some light shined on their

199

:

path, share this message with them.

200

:

And I'll see you on the trail

About the Podcast

Creative Spiritual Journey
one small, deliberate step at a time
We are all on a journey—a journey home to our heavenly parents. Any experienced traveler knows there are days you laugh and days you cry.

We aren’t here to tell you how to live—we are here to share how we live—how we survive, thrive, and even find joy!

The journey gets messy with rainstorms and sleepless flights but the hard times—the miserable times—those make the best stories.

And the vistas, the sunsets, the little birds outside the window—those are the reminders that God is in the details, he is aware of us, he has trod the path before.

The Creative Spiritual Journey Podcast is hosted by Judy and Ghia Cooley—two sisters in their wisdom years—who love the savior and are dedicated to making this journey one small, deliberate step at a time.
