Do you desire greater meaning, direction and help in your life? Learn from Christopher Columbus, “Following the light of the sun, we left the Old World.” On this Episode we will talk “navigation” tools and how to follow the Son.

Speaker:

So bona, my friends, you are listening to

the creative, spiritual journey podcast.

2

:

Small steps, where we give you small steps

to help you walk deliberately with Christ.

3

:

Along your journey.

4

:

I'm Judy Cooley.

5

:

I'll be your host for this episode.

6

:

Thanks for joining me here in South

Africa, Where I'm serving a mission for

7

:

the church of Jesus Christ of latter day

saints with my companion elder Cooley.

8

:

How about we begin where

we left off in episode two.

9

:

We have received the call.

10

:

To go.

11

:

And we've embarked.

12

:

On an adventure.

13

:

And bravely stepped over that

threshold, left home behind.

14

:

And now.

15

:

We find ourselves in the wilderness,

wondering which way to go.

16

:

What direction shall we had?

17

:

So, let me tell you about.

18

:

Navigating our way here in our mission.

19

:

For the first few weeks we

needed our GPS on our phone.

20

:

To get to our house.

21

:

To the church or to the store

and to get ourself back home.

22

:

let me tell you about the

townships that we'd go out into.

23

:

So the townships are.

24

:

big.

25

:

And they have small dirt roads.

26

:

Zero.

27

:

Street signs.

28

:

So we really counted on.

29

:

GPS and how grateful I am

for the miracle of GBS.

30

:

In 1492.

31

:

Christopher Columbus, Navigated to the

new world He used celestial navigation,

32

:

which is Using the moon and the sun.

33

:

and the stars.

34

:

to determine your position.

35

:

Christopher Columbus used

celestial navigation..

36

:

That makes me think of our prophet

president Russell, M Nelson,

37

:

asking us to think celestial.

38

:

that is thinking with the end in mind.

39

:

The long view.

40

:

Christopher Columbus.

41

:

said, following the light of

the sun, we left the old world.

42

:

So the navigating, I want to talk to

you today It's more of the navigating,

43

:

the human heart, and our soul.

44

:

this spiritual navigation.

45

:

So let's change.

46

:

the words on Christopher Columbus's quote.

47

:

Following the light.

48

:

Of the sun.

49

:

S O N.

50

:

We left the old world.

51

:

One of the first steps.

52

:

In navigating.

53

:

Is to know where you are.

54

:

And where is our destination?

55

:

Where you stand.

56

:

And where you are in relationship

to Where you want to head?

57

:

in preach my gospel,

which is the handbook for.

58

:

Missionaries focuses on how to study,

how to teach, how to set goals.

59

:

But just as important.

60

:

As what you do.

61

:

Is who you are and who you are becoming.

62

:

And this isn't just a missionary thing.

63

:

This is a life long journey.

64

:

And so they have a whole chapter that

focuses on Christ-like attributes.

65

:

. So some of those.

66

:

are faith.

67

:

Hope, charity, love, virtue, integrity,

knowledge, patience, humility.

68

:

Diligence and obedience.

69

:

You can see how these are

awesome attributes left Christ.

70

:

That we would love to be like,

I left that there, the end of

71

:

the chapter, there is

an attribute activity.

72

:

It's like a self evaluation of how you're

doing in each one of these attributes.

73

:

it begins with a quote saying, be

comfortable with beginning where you are.

74

:

R And commit yourself to doing

the spiritual work needed to grow.

75

:

seek God's help.

76

:

When you have setbacks, have

confidence that he will help you.

77

:

As you pray, seek guidance about

which attribute to focus on at

78

:

various times on your mission.

79

:

We should say various times of your life.

80

:

So, let me share with you a few of the.

81

:

statements And maybe just close your eyes

and think about how you would respond one

82

:

is never, two is sometimes three, often,

four, almost always, and five, always.

83

:

Okay.

84

:

The attribute of faith.

85

:

I have faith that God will bring

about good things in my life.

86

:

And the lives of others as we

devote ourselves to him and his son.

87

:

Let's see how about one and hope?

88

:

I feel peaceful and

optimistic about the future.

89

:

Okay, one more.

90

:

This one's under the

attribute charity and love.

91

:

I reach out in love to help those who

are lonely, struggling, or discouraged.

92

:

Aren't those wonderful.

93

:

You can see how.

94

:

These help us.

95

:

do some self-reflecting

and see where we are.

96

:

I will attach.

97

:

The attribute activity to the show notes.

98

:

The thing that we need to remember that

becoming like the savior is gradual.

99

:

It's a lifelong process.

100

:

And.

101

:

We need to be patient with ourselves.

102

:

God knows that change and growth.

103

:

Take time.

104

:

A lifetime.

105

:

Maybe even an eternity.

106

:

And he is pleased with your

sincere desires and will bless you.

107

:

And every effort you make.

108

:

Ponder and reflect and evaluate.

109

:

What Christ's like attribute.

110

:

Do you need to improve upon.

111

:

in.

112

:

This is where I'm going to let

you in on the making this episode.

113

:

I have recorded this five different times.

114

:

Each time with a different

story or message.

115

:

And it has taken days and hours.

116

:

And I.

117

:

Have even posted it and have.

118

:

Re posted it.

119

:

So you might have heard.

120

:

Follow the sun.

121

:

Version one.

122

:

This is version two.

123

:

After posting it and losing sleep about it

because I just didn't feel right about it.

124

:

I was.

125

:

Pondering on.

126

:

How can I do this Different.

127

:

next time?

128

:

Reviewing.

129

:

The Christ, like attributes

in preach my gospel.

130

:

And When I came upon the question

in number four in diligence.

131

:

I focus my thoughts on my

calling as a missionary.

132

:

And I thought about all the thoughts

and the times and the focus.

133

:

That I had given to.

134

:

this message in this podcast and

it reminded me of the time that.

135

:

All of a Calgary.

136

:

I prayed to be able to translate and.

137

:

Nothing happened.

138

:

And the Lord basically said

something that you gave it.

139

:

No thought you didn't study

doubt in your mind, any.

140

:

Shares with all of our Calgary, how to

receive answers to prayers of how to.

141

:

Pray about it and study it out in your

mind and you should receive this burning.

142

:

In your bosom, right?

143

:

This confidence, this faith

that is going to be okay.

144

:

And if not, you received

a stupor of thought.

145

:

And I felt like, oh man, I.

146

:

Trying to do this episode, I had load

shedding happened for hours on end.

147

:

I would have our internet go out.

148

:

I'd wake up with a whole

different direction.

149

:

I wanted to take this.

150

:

And.

151

:

I think it was a lesson.

152

:

In fact, I know it was

a great lesson to me.

153

:

Too.

154

:

Ponder upon.

155

:

This Christ-like attribute.

156

:

Of diligence.

157

:

President Irene said in this, the

Lord's church, he called us and

158

:

trusted us, even in the weaknesses.

159

:

He knew we had, He knew

the trials we would face.

160

:

Uh, by faithful service

and through his atonement.

161

:

We can come to want what he wants and

be what we must be to bless those.

162

:

we serve for him.

163

:

As we serve him long enough.

164

:

And with diligence, we will be changed.

165

:

We can become.

166

:

Evermore.

167

:

Like him.

168

:

And the first episode of

embarked, I shared the scripture

169

:

of doctrine covenants for.

170

:

oh, you that embark in the service of God.

171

:

See that you serve him with

all your heart might mind.

172

:

And strength.

173

:

I had been so focused on

getting my heart here.

174

:

Because it was so homesick.

175

:

That I neglected to get

my mind here and focus.

176

:

So what does this all mean?

177

:

It doesn't mean I'm no, I'm

not going to stop the podcast.

178

:

It just means I need to have.

179

:

More diligence.

180

:

And doing.

181

:

What I'm sent here to do labor.

182

:

In the mission field.

183

:

And set aside a certain amount of time.

184

:

To share with you.

185

:

My experiences here.

186

:

And have my message be more of one of.

187

:

The miracles and the blessings.

188

:

And the work that we are

involved here in South Africa.

189

:

I would like to close with a poem

that I received from Coq our mission.

190

:

President's wife.

191

:

It is titled.

192

:

Follow me.

193

:

The sun was high.

194

:

The water still there

nets cast in the sea.

195

:

When Jesus called from distant shores.

196

:

Leave work.

197

:

And follow me.

198

:

Another came to see the Lord.

199

:

He cried on bended knee.

200

:

I'll come.

201

:

But let me say goodbye.

202

:

Lee friends and family.

203

:

And follow me.

204

:

Uh, Richman came, who loved the Lord.

205

:

He promised loyalty.

206

:

But beg to keep his riches.

207

:

LEED gold.

208

:

And follow me.

209

:

The winds were fierce.

210

:

And cold the night he walked upon the sea.

211

:

Lord save us, cried

his frightened friends.

212

:

Lee fears.

213

:

And follow me.

214

:

And so he calls to each of

us upon our stormy seas.

215

:

Lee Franz.

216

:

LEED gold.

217

:

Lee fears, leave all and com.

218

:

And follow me.

219

:

So leave that old world behind?

220

:

like Christopher Columbus

and follow the sun.

221

:

I know, sometimes you feel alone.

222

:

But you've got this.

223

:

He walks with you.

224

:

Remember.

225

:

Jesus Christ is the way he

is the only way to happiness.

226

:

And joy in this life.

227

:

He is the only way back

to our heavenly home.

228

:

Every other way.

229

:

Any other path, whatever way it is.

230

:

It's like being lost.

231

:

Without a GPS.

232

:

In a township little dirt

roads, no street signs.

233

:

So my invitation to you, my

friends is will you, when you

234

:

were wondering which way to go.

235

:

Look to the savior, Jesus Christ, follow

him and his way and your thoughts.

236

:

And your words.

237

:

And I promise you.

238

:

That there is joy on that path.

239

:

And I testify.

240

:

That Jesus is the way.

241

:

How about you head that way?

242

:

And if you know someone

who needs some light.

243

:

On their path.

244

:

Bring them along, And I'll see you on

the trail and we will walk with him.

245

:

Together.

About the Podcast

Creative Spiritual Journey
one small, deliberate step at a time
We are all on a journey—a journey home to our heavenly parents. Any experienced traveler knows there are days you laugh and days you cry.

We aren’t here to tell you how to live—we are here to share how we live—how we survive, thrive, and even find joy!

The journey gets messy with rainstorms and sleepless flights but the hard times—the miserable times—those make the best stories.

And the vistas, the sunsets, the little birds outside the window—those are the reminders that God is in the details, he is aware of us, he has trod the path before.

The Creative Spiritual Journey Podcast is hosted by Judy and Ghia Cooley—two sisters in their wisdom years—who love the savior and are dedicated to making this journey one small, deliberate step at a time.
