Let's Eat Plants!

Transcript
Speaker:

Hooray, GIA here.

2

:

I'm this week's host of the Creative

Spiritual Journey podcast where Judy and I

3

:

talk about those things that bring us joy.

4

:

For me, I find joy by connecting

with nature, connecting with Jesus

5

:

Christ and our heavenly parents.

6

:

Seasonal living, and all the

bits of magic and wonder I come

7

:

across while navigating this

remarkable journey we call life.

8

:

So do you love plants?

9

:

I do.

10

:

Can you imagine a world without them?

11

:

I mean, try it.

12

:

Try to see this world without any plants.

13

:

Impossible.

14

:

Right.

15

:

Plants are an integral part

of this earthly existence.

16

:

Do you think it was a coincidence

that Eve and Adam began their

17

:

earthly story in a garden?

18

:

I don't.

19

:

What better place to experience

the wonder of having a body for the

20

:

first time than surrounded by plants?

21

:

Another thing I don't think was a

coincidence is that Eve and Adam

22

:

were told which fruit they could eat

and which fruit they weren't to eat.

23

:

Have you ever had this thought God could

have made anything the key to mortality?

24

:

Perhaps they could have been forbidden

to cut their hair like Samson, Or

25

:

perhaps there could have been a certain

pond they weren't to bathe in or a

26

:

mountain that they weren't to climb,

but it was none of these things.

27

:

They were told not to eat the fruit

of a certain tree, yet ultimately

28

:

that fruit was the most important

thing for their progression.

29

:

Does that tell you something about

the importance of what we eat?

30

:

I don't know about you, but it does to me.

31

:

But regardless of my fanciful ideas,

I don't think anyone would disagree

32

:

that as humans, we have been in

relationship with plants since antiquity.

33

:

After all, they have been on this

earth longer than we have, and

34

:

with age, I believe comes wisdom.

35

:

And this idea leads me into

what I wanna talk about today.

36

:

I want to talk about how

connecting to nature through

37

:

plants connects us to Jesus Christ.

38

:

And what better way to connect

with plants than by eating them

39

:

as members of the Church of Jesus

Christ of Latter Day Saints.

40

:

we have an amazing guide to

eating called the Word of Wisdom.

41

:

On May 5th, 2025, I did a podcast titled

The Wisdom of Listening to Your Mother.

42

:

It was the first in my series

about the word of wisdom.

43

:

Check out that podcast if you want

an overview to this topic to today.

44

:

I am sharing my second

podcast in this series.

45

:

My goal in doing this is to talk

about the dos of the word of wisdom.

46

:

The dos as in what God wants us to eat

versus the don'ts, which are things God

47

:

doesn't want us to eat or otherwise est

48

:

As members of the Church of

Jesus Christ, we are all mostly

49

:

familiar with the don'ts.

50

:

What I want to do is dive into

what I see as the dos, what

51

:

I believe I should be eating.

52

:

You may have different ideas, and

I think that's wonderful and great.

53

:

I am only sharing what I

find beneficial for me.

54

:

In hopes that it may help someone else

who is searching for their own answers.

55

:

In my reading of the word

of wisdom, I find four dos.

56

:

Number one, eat wholesome herbs.

57

:

Number two, eat seasonally

with Thanksgiving.

58

:

Number three, eat meat sparingly.

59

:

And number four, eat grains.

60

:

Today I want to dive into

number one, eat wholesome herbs.

61

:

In case you don't remember, the

word of wisdom is found in section

62

:

89 of the Doctrine and covenants.

63

:

Let me read you verse 10.

64

:

It says, and again, verily, I say

unto you, all wholesome herbs.

65

:

God hath ordained for the

constitution, nature, and use of man.

66

:

Oh, you have no idea the restraint

I am showing by, not spewing at you.

67

:

Everything I have learned over

the years about wholesome herbs.

68

:

I believe eating plants

is the key to our health.

69

:

I love them.

70

:

But before I go any further,

let's talk about the word herbs.

71

:

All wholesome herbs.

72

:

When Joseph Smith received the word

of wisdom in:

73

:

herb most directly referred to plants,

all kinds of plants, beet, pomegranate,

74

:

zucchini, mango, avocado, eggplant.

75

:

Pineapple, you name it.

76

:

God designed hundreds of plants for us to

eat and we were designed to eat plants.

77

:

If you have any doubts, here

is another great verse found

78

:

in Doctrine and covenants.

79

:

59.

80

:

It says,

81

:

Yay.

82

:

And the herb, and all good things

which come from the earth, whether

83

:

for food or for Raymond, for houses,

or for barns, or for orchards,

84

:

or for gardens, or for vineyards.

85

:

Yay.

86

:

All things which come from the earth

in the season thereof are made for

87

:

the benefit and use of man, both to

please the eye and gladen the heart.

88

:

Yay for food and for Raymond, for

taste and for smell to strengthen

89

:

the body and to enliven the soul.

90

:

I love that.

91

:

Plants strengthen the

body and enliven the soul.

92

:

Now, while I know that the word herb as

used in the word of wisdom most directly

93

:

refers to plants in general, I can't help

but turn to the word as it is often used

94

:

these days to refer to healing herbs.

95

:

To me, the general definition

herb, as a plant, fully encompasses

96

:

the magic of healing herbs, and

I believe we should utilize these

97

:

herbs in every sense of the word.

98

:

But as further evidence, let me

read to you from Alma chapter 46.

99

:

This chapter comes when Captain

Mornay is rallying the knee

100

:

fights to defend their freedom.

101

:

But amidst all this is a little

verse that kind of comes out of the

102

:

blue, like an almost unrelated topic.

103

:

This little verse highlights the

people skill with healing plans.

104

:

It says, quote,

105

:

And there were some who died with fevers,

which at some seasons of the year were

106

:

very frequent in the land, but not

so much so with fevers because of the

107

:

excellent quality of the many plants and

roots, which God had prepared to remove

108

:

the cause of disease to which men were

subject by the nature of the climate.

109

:

Do you love that it says that

God specifically prepared plants

110

:

and roots to remove disease.

111

:

I don't know about you, but I

don't believe this is an accident.

112

:

I mean, right in the middle of the

war chapters is a verse about plants.

113

:

Do you think when Mormon was

compiling the plates, he just

114

:

accidentally left in this verse?

115

:

I know I have a plant loving bias, but I

personally don't think it was an accident.

116

:

The Book of Mormon was meant for

us in our day, despite having the

117

:

availability of pharmaceuticals, I

think plants and herbs are meant for us.

118

:

And don't get me wrong,

I love pharmaceuticals.

119

:

Pharmaceuticals kept my grandmother

alive for 12 years longer than

120

:

her herbal remedies would have.

121

:

I'm just saying for me, I always turn

to plants first when I have a problem.

122

:

And if I can't find answers,

then I turn to doctors and drugs.

123

:

This is for me and my body.

124

:

I fully support you in your own decisions.

125

:

Just let me say, if you are new to

using herbs, keep in mind that herbs

126

:

are not a plant form of pharmaceuticals.

127

:

They do not work the same way.

128

:

This really takes a mind shift

129

:

As one of my favorite herbalists, Maria

Noel Groves says, quote, don't think

130

:

of herbs as mere substitutes for drugs.

131

:

Herbs act like training wheels to help

our body relearn patterns of health,

132

:

breaking away from patterns of disease

and improving day-to-day function.

133

:

Although it's entirely possible to use

herbs in an allopathic way, plugging in

134

:

X herb for Y disease, herbal medicine

works much better incorporated into

135

:

a more thorough, holistic approach.

136

:

while herbs alone can dramatically

improve health and alleviate disease

137

:

and discomfort, they work much

better as part of a multifaceted,

138

:

holistic approach, including diet,

lifestyle, and mind body balance.

139

:

End quote.

140

:

So let me share a little about herbs.

141

:

I'm perfectly aware that all you

have to do is hop online and you

142

:

can learn more about herbs than you

ever wanted to know, and I certainly

143

:

don't claim to be an herbalist.

144

:

But here is my thought.

145

:

In my opinion, the easiest most simple

way of using herbs and getting more plants

146

:

in your life is through herbal teas.

147

:

I love teas for both the herbal benefits

in my body as well as for my spirit,

148

:

And don't let their

simpleness dissuade you.

149

:

Tea are a powerful way to bring the

benefits of plants into your life.

150

:

As members of the Church of Jesus

Christ of Latter Day Saints, we

151

:

have a bit of a stigma around tea.

152

:

As you likely know, one of the

don'ts of the word of wisdom

153

:

is not to drink hot drinks.

154

:

This wording was clarified in

:

155

:

were not to drink tea or coffee.

156

:

And the word tea was further clarified

to mean green tea because coffee

157

:

and green tea were the most commonly

drunk hot drinks at the time.

158

:

Here is where the problem comes in.

159

:

Herbal teas are not green tea.

160

:

There is a distinct difference, but

too often members of the church have

161

:

avoided all teas just to be safe.

162

:

let me tell you a quick story.

163

:

While living in Half Moon Bay,

California, I spent a day in

164

:

San Francisco's Chinatown.

165

:

I had heard that the tea shops

there served herbal teas.

166

:

So I walked into a shop and asked for one,

can I just tell you that I got an earful?

167

:

the Chinese man behind the

counter went off on me.

168

:

He said in an exasperated

voice, something like this.

169

:

Tea is tea.

170

:

All tea is green Tea,

white tea, black tea.

171

:

Green tea.

172

:

All is tea.

173

:

You want herbal?

174

:

Say herbal.

175

:

You want tea?

176

:

Say tea.

177

:

all this to say Americans don't know

the difference between herbals and teas.

178

:

It was hysterical.

179

:

We ended up making peace and I spent

over an hour with him the whole time he

180

:

was going off on one thing or another.

181

:

But you know what?

182

:

By the time I left, I knew

a lot more about teas and

183

:

herbals than when I went in.

184

:

My point is there is no word in the

English language that differentiates

185

:

between green tea and herbal tea.

186

:

Because of this, a lot of us

never drank any kind of tea,

187

:

which I believe is a travesty.

188

:

I.

189

:

I find drinking herbal teas

a wonderful, easy way to

190

:

incorporate herbs into my life.

191

:

I have friends that tell me

they just don't really like tea.

192

:

This makes me so sad because I

think it's mostly a matter of not

193

:

being exposed to the practice.

194

:

I always try to tell them if they don't

like tea's, hot to drink them cold.

195

:

Sometimes that helps and

sometimes it doesn't.

196

:

But let me explain how I love

to think when I take the time to

197

:

drink an herbal tea mindfully,

I think of it as earth magic, an

198

:

invitation to return to my roots.

199

:

The herbs aren't just medicine or flavor.

200

:

They are old, wise friends, and as

I drink, I feel that I'm entering

201

:

into a relationship with them.

202

:

I feel that I am allowing the plant energy

to awaken something ancient within me.

203

:

I believe that my ancestors

all the way back to Mother Eve

204

:

participated in this same ritual.

205

:

And I love that.

206

:

I love to connect with the plants, connect

with the earth, to connect with the past.

207

:

And of course, all these

things connect me with my God.

208

:

If this sounds a little fanciful to

you, let me share the thoughts of

209

:

another one of my favorite herbalists

Maya to who writes that in her

210

:

study of plants she has learned to

understand them through a warp of modern

211

:

knowledge and a weft of ancient wisdom.

212

:

I love this analogy.

213

:

Science is great.

214

:

We love it and we use it.

215

:

But don't forget to add a little

bit of ancient wisdom, or we may

216

:

not fully experience plant magic the

way I believe God intended us to.

217

:

Plants aren't just ingredients.

218

:

They are teachers,

healers, and companions.

219

:

They are here with us on this earth to

strengthen the body and enliven the soul.

220

:

Just like even Adam, I believe

being in relationship with plants

221

:

will help me grow in wisdom,

222

:

Judy and I know your time is precious

and that you have many choices.

223

:

We love that you have chosen to

walk with us for a few minutes as

224

:

we navigate this journey of life.

225

:

226

:

friend, share it with someone on social

media, or leave us a five star rating?

227

:

and if you are using Apple Podcasts,

will you leave us a review?

228

:

Your efforts will help this podcast

grow and it will also let us know

229

:

that you like our show and will give

us the motivation to keep going.

230

:

Thank you in advance for your help.

231

:

In closing, I want to add that

according to Robin Wall, Kimer, in some

232

:

native languages, the term for plant

translates to those who take care of us.

233

:

Isn't that beautiful?

234

:

Let them let plants take care of you.

235

:

Namaste.

About the Podcast

Creative Spiritual Journey
one small, deliberate step at a time
We are all on a journey—a journey home to our heavenly parents. Any experienced traveler knows there are days you laugh and days you cry.

We aren’t here to tell you how to live—we are here to share how we live—how we survive, thrive, and even find joy!

The journey gets messy with rainstorms and sleepless flights but the hard times—the miserable times—those make the best stories.

And the vistas, the sunsets, the little birds outside the window—those are the reminders that God is in the details, he is aware of us, he has trod the path before.

The Creative Spiritual Journey Podcast is hosted by Judy and Ghia Cooley—two sisters in their wisdom years—who love the savior and are dedicated to making this journey one small, deliberate step at a time.
