Deliberately

Ghia - This isn’t a show about New Year’s resolutions. Instead, it’s about " walking deliberately with Jesus Christ.” For the next two years, while Judy is on her mission in South Africa, I plan to deliberately (or more deliberately than I’ve done in the past) do these things—

1.  Scripture study, journaling, prayer, meditation as well as selected secular reading and study

2. Minister to the little community around my home and hopefully to my podcast listeners

3. Grow closer to the natural world and live seasonally

4. Build a house with my fabulous man. And

5. Care for my body, mind and spirit with good food, herbs, water and of course by actually walking

Ghia:

Hello, everyone.

2

:

This is Ghia your host for this week's

creative spiritual journey podcast.

3

:

I'm not sure when this podcast will be

published or when you will listen to it.

4

:

But for me right now, it's early January.

5

:

A traditional time for

new year's resolutions.

6

:

Personally, I'm not

that big on resolutions.

7

:

Especially when they're made

in January, it's cold and dark.

8

:

I want to sleep longer and read more.

9

:

And the days are so short, it seems

like it's hard to get anything done.

10

:

Who decided new years

should be in January anyway.

11

:

Actually, I know the answer to

that because I looked it up.

12

:

January as the start of the new year

was a kind of arbitrary decision

13

:

made in 45 BC by Julius Caesar.

14

:

And later endorsed by

Pope Gregory the eighth.

15

:

Aren't you glad to know that?

16

:

Okay.

17

:

Maybe not really.

18

:

Here's what I think it's hard

to make resolutions in January

19

:

that require a lot of energy

because winter is a time for rest.

20

:

Uh, time to focus on the internal.

21

:

It's a great time for making

plans or growing roots, but not

22

:

necessarily getting anything done

that requires a lot of energy.

23

:

So if you make resolutions in January,

be gentle with them and with yourself.

24

:

Meditate on them as a way to create them

spiritually before jumping right in.

25

:

Practice with them.

26

:

And then modify as needed.

27

:

Then when spring comes, you will

actually have the energy to get going.

28

:

I would've picked spring for the new year.

29

:

If I'd been Julius Caesar.

30

:

New things, bud, in the spring, it's a

great time for new growth and a new plan.

31

:

That's just what makes sense to me.

32

:

There are some people who like the

idea of the new year being in the

33

:

fall when all the harvest is done.

34

:

I might be able to go with that.

35

:

And it would be a way better time for

resolutions than the middle of winter.

36

:

Now, with all this said, If you love

new year's resolutions or have one

37

:

going that's working for you don't

let anything I'm saying stop you.

38

:

Keep going girl, I'm cheering you on.

39

:

So, let me get to the

point I'm trying to make.

40

:

And that is.

41

:

I'm not writing

42

:

Ghia: this particular podcast in

January because it's the new year.

43

:

I'm writing it in January because

this is the month Judy and

44

:

her husband are starting their

mission in Durban, South Africa.

45

:

And while Judy is having all kinds

of experiences and spiritual growth.

46

:

I decided to see if I could in

any way mirror duties, journey

47

:

with a home journey of my own.

48

:

And I thought some of you might like

to join me on a similar journey because

49

:

I suspect most of you are at home

in your usual lives, just like me.

50

:

So, have you ever heard of people

picking a word for the year?

51

:

It's a thing I guess.

52

:

So I have picked a word for my

two year journey and that word is.

53

:

Deliberately.

54

:

I'm going on a creative,

spiritual journey.

55

:

And I plan to walk deliberately.

56

:

That's actually two words.

57

:

So, let me rephrase.

58

:

The theme words I have picked for the

next two years are to walk deliberately.

59

:

I picked the words walk deliberately

because I liked the sound.

60

:

Walk deliberately.

61

:

I hear purpose and substance and power.

62

:

I decided to look up the

definition for deliberate.

63

:

And after doing that, I knew I had

picked the right words for my journey.

64

:

Here's the Marion Webster's

dictionary definition of deliberate.

65

:

A with full awareness

of what one is doing.

66

:

In a way that is intended or planned.

67

:

With full awareness of what one is doing.

68

:

I love that.

69

:

I'm going to have a plan for my journey.

70

:

Now listen to part B.

71

:

In a way that is not hurried

slowly and carefully.

72

:

Part B is where I knew I

had the right word for me.

73

:

I am always in a hurry.

74

:

I want everything done.

75

:

Not right now, but yesterday.

76

:

So my goal for the next two years is to

walk deliberately on this journey of life.

77

:

I'm going to have specific intentions

and I'm not going to be in a hurry.

78

:

In fact duty has already been gone

for almost two weeks and I'm still

79

:

getting my thoughts put together.

80

:

I will be ready when I'm ready.

81

:

It's still the heart of winter.

82

:

It's cold and dark.

83

:

The bears are still hibernating.

84

:

The honey is sticky.

85

:

And I have a cup of peppermint

tea to drink before it gets cold.

86

:

So, let me be clear.

87

:

My word deliberate doesn't mean

I can't go with the flow of

88

:

life or have any spontaneity.

89

:

To the contrary, going with the flow

is something I hope to do deliberately.

90

:

So.

91

:

I can't talk about walking deliberately

without reading some Henry David Thoreau.

92

:

This comes from his book Walden.

93

:

He says, I went to the woods because

I wished to live deliberately.

94

:

To front only the essential

facts of life and see if I could

95

:

not learn what it had to teach.

96

:

And not when I came to die,

discover that I had not lived.

97

:

I did not wish to live what was not life.

98

:

Living is so dear.

99

:

Nor did I wish to practice resignation

unless it was quite necessary.

100

:

I wanted to live deep and suck

out all the marrow of life.

101

:

Hm.

102

:

Does that make you want to

live deliberately to suck

103

:

out all the marrow of life?

104

:

You don't have to go

into the woods though.

105

:

I would highly recommend you do

sometimes, or at least go to your

106

:

garden or someone else's garden.

107

:

If you don't like yours.

108

:

Throw says we need to live

our lives deliberately.

109

:

So we don't miss what's important.

110

:

And being in nature is so important.

111

:

But in general.

112

:

If we don't do things

deliberately life just slips by.

113

:

You know how it is.

114

:

I remember being in my late twenties

and a newly divorced single mom, living

115

:

with my parents in Southern California.

116

:

And I looked back over the year and

realize that the first time since

117

:

I was five, I hadn't gone skiing.

118

:

That may not sound too

important to some of you.

119

:

But I realized I had to make it a

priority if I wanted it to happen.

120

:

I had to make it happen or it wouldn't.

121

:

So here's my plan for the next

two years while Judy is on her

122

:

mission and I'm left at home.

123

:

I'm going on a two year journey of my own.

124

:

And my plan is to set goals that

will help me walk deliberately with

125

:

Jesus Christ and to help me grow

in a deeper relationship with him.

126

:

So before I tell you about my plan,

I want to switch words for a moment

127

:

and talk about the word walk.

128

:

And what that word has to do with being

in a relationship with Jesus Christ.

129

:

Here's a quote.

130

:

I love from Emily Bell Freeman

from the October,:

131

:

Quote.

132

:

When the Lord called To journey

through the land and testify of him.

133

:

Inic hesitated.

134

:

He was blinded by what was broken in him.

135

:

The Lord's answer to what hindered

him was simple and immediate.

136

:

Walk with me.

137

:

Like Anik.

138

:

We must remember that the one who

was bruised and broken for us will

139

:

allow mortality to do its work in us.

140

:

But he didn't ask us to

face those challenges alone.

141

:

No matter the heaviness of our story.

142

:

Or the current course of our path.

143

:

He will invite us to

walk with him and quote.

144

:

Oh, those words, make my heart sing.

145

:

Each of us is invited to walk with God.

146

:

I love it.

147

:

And I want to make sure it happens.

148

:

And by the way, did you know that

there is a whole topical guide

149

:

section on walking with God?

150

:

Check it out sometime.

151

:

It's good.

152

:

Now I know walking with

God, doesn't feel literal.

153

:

But honestly, I don't believe the line

between the spiritual and the physical

154

:

is as defined as we think sometimes.

155

:

So once again, I'm going on a two

year journey and my plan is to

156

:

set goals that will help me walk

deliberately with Jesus Christ.

157

:

Think about it.

158

:

You really get to know someone

when you go on a journey with them.

159

:

So right now I have five things

on my list that I'm going to

160

:

implement deliberately or more

deliberately than I've done before.

161

:

And I believe they're going

to help me be in relationship

162

:

and walk with Jesus Christ.

163

:

And I have to say.

164

:

That they may change

or be refined as I go.

165

:

I'm not riding them and stone.

166

:

But for right now, they are one.

167

:

Scripture study journaling, prayer

meditation, as well as selected

168

:

secular reading and study.

169

:

Two.

170

:

Ministering to the little

community around my home and

171

:

hopefully to my podcast listeners.

172

:

Three.

173

:

Growing closer to the natural

world and living seasonally.

174

:

Four.

175

:

Building a house with my fabulous man.

176

:

Wow.

177

:

Well, that'd be an adventure.

178

:

And five.

179

:

Caring for my body, mind and spirit

with good food, herbs, water.

180

:

And of course, By actually walking.

181

:

So someone I'm not sure who.

182

:

Put up a little tree in our chapel

with a stack of papers next to it.

183

:

And a note that said make a

spiritual new year's resolution.

184

:

And the idea was that you write

your resolution on a piece of

185

:

paper and stick it on a tree.

186

:

This is a very cute idea

and a sweet thought.

187

:

But I want to say that I'm learning

more and more how important our physical

188

:

bodies are to our spiritual lives.

189

:

I don't believe you should work on one

area to the exclusion of the other.

190

:

For example, I have building a

house with my husband on my list.

191

:

And you might wonder how that's going

to help me grow closer to my savior.

192

:

For Kirk and me as a time to

use our creative gifts, we are

193

:

creating a beautiful place to live.

194

:

And because our little piece of land is

surrounded by so much natural beauty.

195

:

I feel responsible to build something

to the best of my ability that

196

:

reflects the beauty around me.

197

:

As a daughter of God,

I am a natural creator.

198

:

It's part of my character.

199

:

The house project is also a time to

practice patience, faith, and love.

200

:

Not everyone has a big project like

this, but everyone has something they

201

:

can deliberately create in their lives.

202

:

Even if it's creating dinner.

203

:

Or maybe a big mess.

204

:

The idea is created deliberately

in relationship with Jesus Christ.

205

:

Over the next two years, I will be

sharing my thoughts, accomplishments,

206

:

progress, summits, sunburns, maybe

a little dehydration and whatever

207

:

other adventures and obstacles

I come across on this journey.

208

:

And just to be clear.

209

:

The journey isn't about getting anywhere.

210

:

It's about what I become.

211

:

I hope you will make your own plan

goals, resolutions, whatever you

212

:

call them and join me as we walk

deliberately on a journey of becoming.

213

:

Of becoming our best selves of

becoming more like our savior.

214

:

It doesn't matter what time of

year you join us or when you find

215

:

this podcast start where you are.

216

:

I would simply recommend you

keep the literal seasons and

217

:

the seasons of your life.

218

:

In mind.

219

:

As you evaluate the energy, you

are able to put towards your goals.

220

:

If you aren't sure what I'm talking

about, I will go into this topic more

221

:

in future podcasts because seasonal

living is one of my favorite topics.

222

:

So, thanks for joining me for this

creative, spiritual journey podcast..

223

:

Right now this time of year I'm savoring,

any time I get to spend in the winter sun.

224

:

And relishing my cup of peppermint

tea next to the wood-burning

225

:

stove sending love to you all.

About the Podcast

Creative Spiritual Journey
one small, deliberate step at a time
We are all on a journey—a journey home to our heavenly parents. Any experienced traveler knows there are days you laugh and days you cry.

We aren’t here to tell you how to live—we are here to share how we live—how we survive, thrive, and even find joy!

The journey gets messy with rainstorms and sleepless flights but the hard times—the miserable times—those make the best stories.

And the vistas, the sunsets, the little birds outside the window—those are the reminders that God is in the details, he is aware of us, he has trod the path before.

The Creative Spiritual Journey Podcast is hosted by Judy and Ghia Cooley—two sisters in their wisdom years—who love the savior and are dedicated to making this journey one small, deliberate step at a time.
