:Gia here.
3
:Welcome to the Creative Spiritual
Journey podcast, where Judy and I talk
4
:about those things that bring us joy.
5
:For me, I find joy by connecting
with nature, connecting with Jesus
6
:Christ and our heavenly parents,
seasonal living, and all the bits
7
:of magic and wonder I come across.
8
:So, if you've been listening to this
podcast for a while, you may recall
9
:that I mentioned last year that
it was my plan to celebrate Jesus
10
:Christ in every season, which I did.
11
:And most of those celebrations
I mentioned in my podcasts.
12
:I based those celebrations around
other holidays we regularly celebrate.
13
:This year, as I was planning new
celebrations, I decided to do
14
:something a little different.
15
:This year, I am going to
celebrate Christ on the two solar
16
:equinoxes and the two solstices.
17
:This might seem odd for a Christian,
because celebrations around the
18
:equinox and solstices are typically
pagan, witchy, or new agey.
19
:But you know what?
20
:I don't care.
21
:I am taking these prominent dates
back and making them my own.
22
:My belief is that God, Jesus Christ,
created this earth and everything in
23
:it, everything about it, and everything
it represents teaches me about Him,
24
:which includes these solar events.
25
:So there you go.
26
:I plan to celebrate Jesus Christ in
accordance with the four prominent
27
:dates created by the solar cycle.
28
:This decision has led me
to some interesting things.
29
:For example, I love petroglyphs.
30
:I love to be out hiking in the
desert and come across a sheep
31
:or other animals such as an owl
or heron pecked into a rock wall.
32
:I especially love to find spirals
and I'm always looking for them.
33
:Turns out there is another similar
symbol to the spiral that I have often
34
:seen and just not paid any attention to.
35
:But now that I have a reference for what
it might mean, I think it's super cool,
36
:and maybe even as cool as a spiral.
37
:Now, just to be clear, no one in our day
knows what any ancient people had in mind
38
:when they painted or pecked into the rock.
39
:All we can do is speculate.
40
:But people in the know seem to
believe they understand this symbol.
41
:It is most often called the sun
cross, but it is also called
42
:a solar cross or wheel cross.
43
:I've seen it here in the
Southwest United States.
44
:In fact, one place it is found is on
the famous newspaper rock outside the
45
:entrance to Canyonlands National Park.
46
:But the same symbol is also found
in Scandinavia, Britain, Ireland,
47
:And I even found two websites that said it
was painted on cave walls in South Africa.
48
:but when I tried to search for these
exact locations, I couldn't find anything.
49
:So I'm kind of questioning that.
50
:But let me try to describe this symbol.
51
:It is an equilateral cross encompassed
by a circle, equilateral meaning all the
52
:arms are of equal length versus the more
traditional Christian symbol of a cross.
53
:Regardless, this symbol is a cross.
54
:So, it ties in beautifully with
my celebration of Jesus Christ.
55
:So here's where speculation
has taken people who study the
56
:meaning of this ancient symbol.
57
:The most common interpretation is
that the circle represents the sun's
58
:circular path throughout the year,
with the spaces between the arms of the
59
:cross representing the four seasons,
winter, spring, summer, and fall.
60
:And the arms themselves, where
they touch the circle, marking
61
:the equinoxes, and the solstices.
62
:Can you picture this?
63
:I hope I'm being clear.
64
:The winter solstice is at the top,
the summer solstice is at the bottom,
65
:and the spring and fall equinoxes are
on the right and left respectively.
66
:So the idea is this ancient symbol
depicts human experience with the sun.
67
:I think that's so cool.
68
:And then, of course, there is the
idea that in creating a drawing of
69
:the sun, S U N, it is a homophone for
S O N, referring to the Son of God.
70
:So all these things solidified my decision
to celebrate Christ throughout the
71
:year according to the solar calendar.
72
:And this got me so excited.
73
:And then I started wondering
how I was going to celebrate.
74
:Think about a celebration.
75
:What do you do?
76
:You decorate.
77
:You have food.
78
:Plan activities.
79
:Invite friends.
80
:You make it a big deal, right?
81
:Go all out.
82
:Have fun.
83
:Oh, no.
84
:I do like to have fun, but I didn't want
to have a party, and who would I invite?
85
:Oh, so what should I do?
86
:I woke up pondering this one morning.
87
:Oh, mornings, don't you love them?
88
:I have my best ideas in the morning.
89
:And this particular morning, as I
was pondering my seasonal celebration
90
:of Jesus Christ, I thought maybe
going to the temple would be
91
:a good part of my celebration.
92
:And then the story of Jesus Christ
going to the temple when he was
93
:12 years old crossed my mind.
94
:And then my brain blew up with an idea!
95
:I would celebrate the life of Jesus
Christ in a year, starting with his
96
:visit to the temple on the spring
equinox, all the way around to his death.
97
:on the winter solstice, the darkest
time of the year, representing
98
:the extinguishing of the light
of Christ as he was crucified.
99
:And then I would be in the perfect
place to complete the circle by
100
:celebrating his birth on Christmas
as the light begins to return.
101
:I haven't determined what I'm
going to focus on for the summer
102
:solstice and the fall equinox.
103
:I will decide that as I get
closer, but I hope you can
104
:see where I'm going with this.
105
:In my opinion, the solar cycle
creates a beautiful way to celebrate
106
:Jesus Christ in every season.
107
:So here we are just over a week away from
the spring equinox, which takes Which
108
:takes place on March 20th this year.
109
:And as I said, if I am following
Jesus Christ on his journey of
110
:life, I am correlating the spring
equinox with his childhood.
111
:This leads me to the story of his 12
year old visit to the temple, as recorded
112
:in Luke chapter 2, verse 41 through 53.
113
:Let me take a minute and
read these verses to you.
114
:parents went to Jerusalem every
year at the Feast of the Passover.
115
:And when he was twelve years
old, they went up to Jerusalem
116
:after the custom of the Feast.
117
:And when they had fulfilled the days,
as they returned, the child Jesus
118
:tarried behind in Jerusalem, and
Joseph and his mother knew not of it.
119
:But they, supposing him to have
been in the company, went a day's
120
:journey, and they sought him among
their kinsfolk and acquaintance.
121
:And when they found him not, they turned
back again to Jerusalem seeking him.
122
:and it came to pass that after three
days they found him in the temple.
123
:Sitting in the midst of the doctors, both
hearing them and asking them questions.
124
:And all that heard him were astonished
at his understanding and answers.
125
:And when they saw him, they were amazed.
126
:And his mother said unto him, Son,
why hast thou thus dealt with us?
127
:Behold, thy father and I
have sought thee sorrowing.
128
:And he said unto them, How
is it that you sought me?
129
:Wist ye not that I must be
about my father's business?
130
:And they understood not the saying,
which he spoke unto them, and he
131
:went down with them and came to
Nazareth and was subject unto them.
132
:But his mother kept all
these sayings in her heart.
133
:and Jesus increased in wisdom
and stature and in favor with
134
:God, and man, I love this story.
135
:I love the humanness we
witness in Jesus Christ.
136
:He was a young man.
137
:He didn't realize he still needed to
tell his parents what he was doing.
138
:But there is more to it than that.
139
:he actually had quite a justified
reason for this opinion.
140
:Let me explain a few details I found
in the book, Days of Awe, by Gail Boyd.
141
:Gail was born to Jewish parents,
and as she says, she wrote the
142
:Days of Awe to show the connection
between Judaism and Mormonism.
143
:So this book is a great resource.
144
:I'm going to go over this quickly.
145
:If you want more detail,
you'll have to read the book.
146
:goes through and explains the idea
that Jesus was likely born at Passover,
147
:which takes place in the spring.
148
:Not our traditional middle of winter,
which means if Jesus was going to the
149
:temple for the Passover at 12 years
old, his birthday was at the same time.
150
:He would have been turning 13,
the traditional age for a Jewish
151
:boy to have his bar mitzvah.
152
:The bar mitzvah is a celebration
that marks a boy's transition
153
:into adulthood and their ability
to be responsible for themselves.
154
:The ceremony includes a talk by the
rabbi, a prayer of thanks by the boy's
155
:father, a celebratory meal, and the boy
may be asked to read from the Torah.
156
:Does this start to put
pieces together in your mind?
157
:If Jesus had just had his Bar Mitzvah,
can't you imagine him believing he
158
:was old enough to be on his own?
159
:He was an adult now, right?
160
:He was expected to act like a man.
161
:This was the first time he
got to read from the Torah.
162
:The first time he got to share
the knowledge that must have
163
:been bubbling out of him.
164
:It just didn't cross his mind that
his parents would be in a panic that
165
:they couldn't find him for three days.
166
:Mary must have been a wreck, but obviously
Jesus was sorry for the worry he caused
167
:his parents, because it does say that
once again he became subject unto them.
168
:He realized he still had to
communicate with his parents.
169
:But here is where I believe
is a great lesson for me.
170
:I hope you won't think it's
blasphemous to say, but it appears
171
:that young Jesus made a mistake.
172
:Of course he should have been
about his father's business, but he
173
:should also have told his mother.
174
:Here is where the lesson comes in.
175
:We all make mistakes, it's part of the
human condition, but we forgive ourselves.
176
:We make restitution where
appropriate and we move on, knowing
177
:our mistakes are part of life.
178
:Jesus learned this lesson easily at 13.
179
:I am 58 and still struggling to figure
it out, thus my reason for focusing my
180
:attention on Christ this spring equinox.
181
:Now there is another part
of the story that I love.
182
:And that is that at 13 years
old, Jesus knew who he was.
183
:The Son of God.
184
:Do I know who I am?
185
:Do I truly recognize my divine heritage?
186
:Sometimes I think I do.
187
:I mean, I work on it enough.
188
:I love the opening lines
of the young woman's theme.
189
:I am a beloved daughter of
heavenly parents with a divine
190
:nature and an eternal destiny.
191
:I say these words over and over
to myself in an effort to remember
192
:who I am and what my potential is.
193
:I was reminded of this just the other day
when I heard my fabulous man mumbling to
194
:himself as he was studying his scriptures.
195
:I heard him say, Shake off the dust.
196
:Arise.
197
:Sit down.
198
:And I said, what are you reading?
199
:And he said, 2 Nephi 8, where
Nephi is quoting Isaiah.
200
:And he read me the quote.
201
:It says, shake thyself from
the dust, arise, sit down.
202
:Oh, Jerusalem.
203
:Do you have any idea
what these words mean?
204
:We had to look them up.
205
:Shake off the dust is a reference
to sitting on the ground.
206
:So this verse is saying, get up out
of the dirt and sit on my throne
207
:where you belong, where you belong
as my children, the children of God.
208
:So, 10 days from when I'm putting
out this podcast, the Spring
209
:Equinox will occur on March 20th.
210
:I live an hour and a half
from the closest temple.
211
:For my Spring Equinox celebration of
Jesus Christ, my plan is to drive
212
:to the temple, Attend a session,
camp somewhere in our beautiful
213
:southwest desert, just like Jesus
Christ would have camped outside
214
:the walls of Jerusalem for Passover.
215
:The next morning, I will attend
another session and then drive
216
:home, maybe stopping for some
celebratory Thai food on the way.
217
:And as part of my celebration, I am going
to focus on forgiving myself for making
218
:mistakes and put a special effort into
reminding myself of my divine heritage.
219
:If any of this sounds good to you,
I hope you will take these ideas
220
:and plan your own celebration
of Jesus Christ this spring.
221
:Equinox.
222
:Judy and I know your time is precious
and that you have many choices.
223
:We love that you have chosen to
walk with us for a few minutes as
224
:we navigate this journey of life.
225
:If you like this podcast, will
you take the time right now to
226
:share it with a friend or share
it somewhere on social media?
227
:Judy and I need your help in reaching
our goal of 150 Apple podcast followers.

impact in the world and will give Judy
229
:and I the motivation to keep going.

231
:And so, my dear listeners, this Spring
Equinox, I hope you will brush off
232
:the dust, get up and sit down on
the throne your God has prepared for
233
:you, the throne where you belong.
234
:Namaste.
