Welcome Franz.
2
:To the creative,
spiritual journey podcast.
3
:Life is calling you each day,
calling you to step out your front
4
:door and onto that path that leads
through the wildernesses, beyond the
5
:horizon to stand on mountain tops.
6
:Sunny.
7
:Bonanni from the
motherland of South Africa.
8
:It's here that my husband and I are
serving a mission for the church of
9
:Jesus Christ of latter day saints.
10
:My name is Judy Cooley.
11
:Along with my sister-in-law Ghia Cooley.
12
:We are your host But we'd
rather you consider us.
13
:More like your hiking buddies
together for a brief moment.
14
:As we walk this path, we will
share what's in our heart.
15
:Uh, our love for the savior
and his beautiful creations.
16
:As well as the joys and the lessons
we are discovering along the way.
17
:So will you shake off the desk, pick
up your packs and join us on the trail.
18
:It's going to be an incredible journey.
19
:Let's go.
20
:Today.
21
:Is 428.
22
:I've been numbering the day
nd,:
23
:When we embarked on this mission
to go and serve with all our
24
:heart, might mind and strength.
25
:Ooh, and it's taken all of it.
26
:This podcast gives me the opportunity
to joyfully testify of Jesus Christ.
27
:And to shine his light and
to stay connected to you.
28
:My friends.
29
:Today is also Ash Wednesday.
30
:A holy day of prayer and fasting in
many of the Christian denominations.
31
:It marks the first day of lent,
which is 40 days of fasting.
32
:And penitence before Easter.
33
:It's not something we celebrate
in the church of Jesus
34
:Christ of latter day saints.
35
:In fact, growing up in Utah, I was totally
unaware of it until I moved to Colorado.
36
:And I encountered France with black
crosses smudged on their foreheads.
37
:I understand now that the
ashes used Our firm burnt Palm
38
:leaves from the previous year.
39
:Palm Sunday.
40
:Interesting.
41
:Huh?
42
:So why ashes.
43
:You hear about the practice of
wearing sack, cloth and ashes?
44
:In the old Testament.
45
:It was a public sign of
repentance and humility.
46
:The first mention of this at cloth and
ashes is found in the book of Genesis.
47
:The story of Joseph and his brothers.
48
:You know, The story of
sibling rivalry and jealousy.
49
:Jacob mourned the loss of
his favorite son, Joseph.
50
:After Joseph's siblings sold him into
slavery and then lied to Jacob that his
51
:beloved son was killed by a wild animal.
52
:And so he dressed himself in sack, cloth
and ashes and more into, for 40 days.
53
:It could also be from the garden
of Eden when the Lord tells Adam.
54
:From dust thou art and Fred
dust bout shall return.
55
:Ashes reminders.
56
:Of death.
57
:We will die.
58
:And so we should treat each day as a gift.
59
:Y 40 days before Easter.
60
:It is a reminder of Jesus fasting
for 40 days in the desert before
61
:his earthly ministry began.
62
:So for many practicing Christians,
Ash Wednesday is spent fasting.
63
:Praying and deciding on a
personal sacrifice for the season.
64
:I've never been very good at fasting.
65
:I don't know about you.
66
:But I tend to get hangry.
67
:And that seems to defeat
the purpose of fasting.
68
:Because we're supposed to
be humble and teachable.
69
:I do believe that fasting is powerful.
70
:Spiritually and there's many
incidences in the scriptures.
71
:That teach us how fasting
combined with mighty prayer.
72
:Can bring about miracles.
73
:And in fact it brought thousands of the
Laymanites to repentance and to Christ.
74
:We are commanded to fast
75
:Fasting for me is showing.
76
:My physical self.
77
:That my spiritual self is
the captain of this vessel.
78
:And sacrificing, I know
always brings forth blessings.
79
:So Ash, Wednesday, Palm
Sunday, Easter fasting.
80
:Sacrificing all these things are symbolic.
81
:To draw our attention to the savior.
82
:we have many traditions,
symbolic rituals and ordinances.
83
:That bring us into Christ
that point to Christ.
84
:So that we can always remember him.
85
:What I find interesting
though, is the Mardi Gras part
86
:of this leading up to land.
87
:That to me seems like it's
just a party hard before land.
88
:Get it out of your system.
89
:I'm not sure if fasting and repentance
is supposed to work that way.
90
:This past year in South Africa.
91
:Not only have I fallen in love
with the landscape of South Africa.
92
:But she has taught me a great
lesson from the African failed.
93
:Which is the offer console word for field?
94
:Also known as the Savannah.
95
:Or in is a Zulu.
96
:LA LA.
97
:When we arrived in January of 2024.
98
:Ah, I was probably the most
homesick person there was.
99
:And we landed in Durbin and
we're trained, and then it was
100
:time to drive to new castle.
101
:And I had in my mind.
102
:New castle was an industrial
city and I was dreading, not.
103
:Happy about being.
104
:here for the next two years.
105
:as we drove and left behind the
big city of Durban, And looking
106
:at the car window at The field.
107
:It calmed my heart.
108
:It was the middle of summer.
109
:So the fields were bright green.
110
:Dotted with Acacia trees.
111
:Now Acacia trees are these flat top
trees It's just how you pitcher.
112
:Africa The lion king.
113
:And I'm getting glimpses
of wild flowers and birds.
114
:And the sky is so big and colorful clouds.
115
:And these majestic drunk Ginsburg's
mountains in the backdrop.
116
:I could envision wild
animals, roaming, freely.
117
:I just sat mesmerized for miles.
118
:South Africa is so beautiful.
119
:I fell in love with her that day.
120
:We have a view from our window of a field.
121
:We've watched the wind blow
through the long grass.
122
:It looks like ocean waves.
123
:In autumn, we watched it turn golden and
then winter came the fields everywhere.
124
:We're set on fire with prescribed burns.
125
:So for months, Uh, fields burned.
126
:Even in the townships, even
the field outside my window.
127
:Our home smelled like a campfire.
128
:The fires are fast.
129
:And precise.
130
:Eric of course found this a very
exciting, he even said if he had to get
131
:a job here, that's what he'd want to do.
132
:Be the one that starts the fires.
133
:That's cause the family calls
him the Lord of the flames.
134
:At home, these fires would be alarming.
135
:To see the whole.
136
:Mountain side on fire.
137
:I thought it was strange
And it would actually.
138
:rain ashes outside covering our car and
our porch and floating into the house.
139
:So in winter.
140
:Most of the fields are black.
141
:Come spring, October, November.
142
:Bright green grass.
143
:Begins to appear through the ashes.
144
:So why is it important to burn the grass?
145
:What is this all about?
146
:This is from the website,
south African national lands.
147
:Many of the grasses and some plants
require burning to remain healthy.
148
:By removing accumulated dead material.
149
:The fire also clears the ticks and other
unwanted pissed and invasive plants.
150
:The grasses have this root system.
151
:That that can withstand the fires.
152
:And so do the Acacia trees.
153
:After the burn, the black and
soil quickly absorbs sunlight.
154
:The sunlight warms the earth.
155
:And encourages seed germination.
156
:The charred plant remains.
157
:Turn into a rich fertilizer.
158
:Encouraging new growth.
159
:To sprout from the network of that
root system, deep below the ground.
160
:In pastures and Meadows, the new
growth is a healthier foliage.
161
:So from this ashes comes beauty.
162
:Comes new growth.
163
:S to someone who doesn't
understand the purpose of the fire.
164
:This would look devastating.
165
:And destructive.
166
:Fire in this case becomes a cleansing.
167
:And renewing force for the earth.
168
:This got me to thinking
about the cleansing.
169
:And renewing a force a repentance.
170
:By fire.
171
:And the holy ghost.
172
:And second Chapter 31 for 17.
173
:For the gate, by which you should enter
his repentance and baptism by water.
174
:Then come at the remission of your
sins by fire and by the holy ghost.
175
:What does this fire look
like spiritually to us?
176
:Okay, can we do it?
177
:Can we talk repentance?
178
:This has never been easy for
me to talk about the R word.
179
:But as a mission, Avery supposed
to preach nothing but repentance.
180
:That's what it says in
the doctrine covenants.
181
:And the prophet Russell M.
182
:Nelson said in April, 2019.
183
:Quote recently, I have found myself
drawn to the Lord's instructions given
184
:through the prophet Joseph Smith.
185
:say nothing but repentance
and to this generation.
186
:This declaration is often
repeated throughout scripture.
187
:It prompts an obvious question.
188
:Does everyone need to repent?
189
:The answer is yes.
190
:So why is repentance so misunderstood?
191
:Why am I uncomfortable talking about it?
192
:Maybe it's like the burning of the fields.
193
:To those who don't understand this
remission of our sins by fire ACON
194
:look devastating and destructive.
195
:When I looked up the definition of.
196
:Penitence.
197
:For understanding, because it
was mentioned in my research for
198
:Ash Wednesday, so many times.
199
:This is what I read.
200
:Penitence is.
201
:Latin root.
202
:For pain and punishment.
203
:There you go.
204
:Sounds fun.
205
:Repentance pain, sorrow, or grief
of heart for sins or offenses.
206
:real penitence brings from
a conviction of guilt.
207
:And in gratitude to God and is
followed by an amendment of life.
208
:Now, what words jumped out to you?
209
:Was it pain and punishment?
210
:That sounds miserable.
211
:I don't know about you, but naturally
I avoid pain and punishment.
212
:And so it's no wonder that repentance.
213
:Gives us this negative vibe.
214
:If you remember.
215
:Elder Holland statement that
repentance is the most hope for
216
:word in the English language.
217
:Hopeful.
218
:What dictionary is he reading?
219
:I'll tell you.
220
:The Bible dictionary.
221
:It says that repentance.
222
:The Greek word of which this is
translation denotes a change of mind.
223
:A fresh view about God, about
oneself and about the world.
224
:I love that a fresh view.
225
:It reminds me of my field.
226
:Since we are born into conditions
where mortality repentance comes
227
:to mean a turning of the heart.
228
:And wheel to God.
229
:without repentance.
230
:there can be no progress in the
things of the soul salvation for all
231
:accountable persons are stained by
sin and must be cleansed in order
232
:to enter the kingdom of heaven.
233
:Repentance is not optional for salvation.
234
:you can't opt out.
235
:It is a commandment of God.
236
:And I know that all of God's laws.
237
:And commandments.
238
:Are given because of
his great love for us.
239
:The lot is love.
240
:The commandments.
241
:Our love.
242
:So that is why That repentance
is wonderfully joyous.
243
:He says too many people consider
repentance as punishment.
244
:So let's get this clear.
245
:Repentance is not punishment.
246
:But this feeling of being
penalized is in gendered by Satan.
247
:He tries to block us
from looking to Christ.
248
:Jesus Christ who stands there with
open arms, hoping any wheeling to heal.
249
:I forgive cleanse, strengthen,
purify, and sanctify us.
250
:Now wait.
251
:Repentance is not punishment.
252
:The Webster dictionary has it wrong.
253
:And so do most of us in our Christian
culture and traditions have it wrong.
254
:Oh, what joy field?
255
:My bosom.
256
:And I heard him say that, did it yours?
257
:The word repentance in the
Greek new Testament is met.
258
:Tenao.
259
:The prefix Meto, meaning change.
260
:And the suffix Nao is
related to the Greek words.
261
:That mean mind, knowledge,
spirit, and breath.
262
:This when Jesus asks you and me to repent,
he's inviting us to change our mind.
263
:Our knowledge or spirit,
even the way we breathe.
264
:He's asking us to change the
way we love think serve, spend
265
:our time, treat each other.
266
:and even take care of our bodies.
267
:This is the lesson of the
burning of the fields.
268
:So, what do you think
about this invitation?
269
:To discover the joy of daily repentance.
270
:We should be.
271
:excited about it.
272
:I viewed it, most of my
life as something miserable.
273
:And Sometimes I find it
hard to make it sincere.
274
:Without some way of feeling punished.
275
:To be truthful.
276
:Didn't think about it daily.
277
:President Nelson continues.
278
:Please do not fear or delay repenting,
Satan delights in your misery.
279
:Cut it short.
280
:Cashed his influence out of your life.
281
:Start today to experience the joy
of putting off the natural man.
282
:The savior loves us.
283
:Always.
284
:But especially when we repent.
285
:He promised that though the mountains
shall depart and the Hills be removed.
286
:My kindness shall not depart from
the, that is why his love his charity.
287
:Never.
288
:Fails.
289
:So if you feel like you have straight
off the covenant path too far, too
290
:long, Done something way too bad.
291
:And there's no way to return
that just simply is not true.
292
:I think some of the
misunderstanding is because.
293
:We are mixing up the feelings
of shame of having sand.
294
:With the hope, enjoy repentance sin.
295
:And it's natural consequences
is the punishment.
296
:CN is the turning away from God.
297
:Separating ourselves from his presence.
298
:Is what causes the suffering and the
pain sin creates the gap and the shame.
299
:Satan does his best work
on us after the sin?
300
:Telling us lies that lead us
to misery and hopelessness.
301
:Repentance is not punishment.
302
:Shame or oppression.
303
:It is the opposite.
304
:Repentance is turning towards
God using the enabling grace of
305
:the atonement of Jesus Christ.
306
:It's returning to him.
307
:His love to return to our covenants.
308
:Repentance is exercising.
309
:Faith.
310
:Repentance is a wonderful gift and this
really does bring beauty from ashes.
311
:Repentance is a healing balm,
the cure, the medicine to heal
312
:us from our pain and suffering.
313
:If we really know.
314
:And understand that.
315
:I think we would want to run.
316
:To repentance daily.
317
:If we look at the Hebrew definition
of repentance it's to return.
318
:To return to God.
319
:So if we take this Greek and this Hebrew
definitions and we mesh it together,
320
:And we have that repentance is.
321
:Turning to God.
322
:So that we can be changed.
323
:We can become cleansed by the fire
made new, again, just like the
324
:new, fresh, bright green grass
that comes out of the ashes.
325
:Our faith will be stronger.
326
:Our testimonies healthier
and our souls resilient.
327
:That is what daily
repentance can do for us.
328
:So this being Ash Wednesday.
329
:40 days til Easter lint begins.
330
:This is the fasting and
preparing our hearts for Easter.
331
:Okay.
332
:40 days.
333
:What can you do?
334
:Either stop.
335
:Or begin new.
336
:For 40 days.
337
:When pondering and praying to
figure out what I am going to do.
338
:This is funny because I did this
while walking and praying out in the
339
:Greenfield where we run with the zebras
and the blessed bucks and spring books.
340
:And will there be.
341
:this impression came upon me
that I was to try this invitation
342
:by the prophet to repent daily.
343
:Remembering it is joyful and a wondrous
gift, not a list of things I've
344
:done and the punishment I deserve.
345
:I'm going to practice recognizing
where I separate myself from God.
346
:And I had this idea.
347
:I'm calling it the stop.
348
:Drop and roll plan.
349
:You get it.
350
:Cause that's the fire drill.
351
:, I am going to stop.
352
:when I'm doing.
353
:Whatever it is that I'm doing,
that's turning me away from the
354
:spirit, turning away from God.
355
:I drop it, or I may even
need to drop to my knees.
356
:Which doesn't mean literally.
357
:But it may drop into prayer in my heart.
358
:So I can roll.
359
:Back into God's presence.
360
:Stop drop and roll.
361
:Let me give you an example.
362
:I have a problem with
social media distractions.
363
:Because I make a post every
day, sometimes after the post.
364
:I find myself.
365
:Wandering down these endless.
366
:Rat holes.
367
:Um, social media.
368
:Which takes me away from time on the
mission, my attention from things that
369
:I'm supposed to be doing in the moment.
370
:And away from the spirit sometimes even.
371
:I catch myself.
372
:I will stop it immediately drop to.
373
:Prayer in my heart.
374
:Put my focus back on Christ.
375
:And roll.
376
:Back into his presence.
377
:So, are you interested in joining
me in this Ash Wednesday experiment?
378
:Yes.
379
:So begin with praying.
380
:To know what sacrifice for the
next 40 days leading up to Easter.
381
:What you can stop.
382
:And while you can start to prepare your
heart to celebrate the greatest event.
383
:In the forever.
384
:The infinite torment and
sacrifice of the son of God.
385
:Jesus Christ.
386
:His crucifixion.
387
:And resurrection.
388
:Ask heavenly father.
389
:I promise you.
390
:He'll tell you, you ask,
he'll tell you what.
391
:Where are you lacking?
392
:Where do you need to change?
393
:What do you need to stop?
394
:What do you need to begin?
395
:He wants us to willingly give
him our hearts and, you know,
396
:I know change can be hard.
397
:But it can also be fun.
398
:It can be rewarding and exciting.
399
:What do you want to stop doing?
400
:Burn it?
401
:And repent of it.
402
:And what do you want to start doing?
403
:Where do you want to see this new growth?
404
:Where do you want to
experience this in your life?
405
:Change.
406
:And let's not just wait to do it on.
407
:Ash Wednesday.
408
:And live in Mardi Gras all year long.
409
:But to find joy in daily repenting.
410
:Daily turning our faces towards
the son, the son of God.
411
:And let the shadows, the
shadows of sin fall behind you.
412
:I can't finish all this.
413
:Talk about ashes without sharing an
African proverb that goes like this.
414
:Ashes flight back into the face
of one who throws it, meaning.
415
:What goes around, comes around.
416
:So I'm tossing it out there.
417
:I'm tossing the ashes
and crane repentance.
418
:I know, it sounds a little crazy.
419
:But I'm inviting you to repent
and prepare your hearts.
420
:For Easter.
421
:I'm sharing the joyful
message that he is risen.
422
:He's broken the chains of death and CN.
423
:And we need no longer sit
in sack, cloth and ashes.
424
:We are redeemed.
425
:Now that is the greatest
message I could share geeky.
426
:And I know your time is precious.
427
:And want to thank you for walking with
us on your journey for a little moment.
428
:I'd appreciate it.
429
:If you'd share this podcast with
someone, you know, who could use
430
:some light shined on their path.
431
:And the more we walk with the merrier.
432
:Ghia.
433
:And I have a goal of reaching 150
hiking buddies on the creative,
434
:spiritual journey podcast.
435
:And that is only accomplished with your
help sharing it one person at a time.
436
:Happy Wednesday, Fran.
437
:And I'll see you on the trail.
