Speaker:

Hooray, GIA here.

2

:

I'm this week's host for the

Creative Spiritual Journey podcast

3

:

where Judy and I talk about

those things that bring us joy.

4

:

For me, I find joy by connecting

with nature, connecting with Jesus

5

:

Christ and our heavenly parents.

6

:

Seasonal living, and all the bits of magic

and wonder I come across while navigating

7

:

this remarkable journey we call life.

8

:

Believe it or not, we are only two

weeks away from the September Equinox.

9

:

Notice I called this the September

Equinox, not the fall equinox.

10

:

That's because only half of

the world is heading into fall.

11

:

The other half is heading into spring.

12

:

But wherever you are, the Equinox

is an auspicious time of year

13

:

when the light of day is equal

in length with the dark of night.

14

:

Most people call this a time of

balance, but to me everything

15

:

feels slightly out of balance.

16

:

In the Northern hemisphere,

we are heading into fall.

17

:

It's cool at night and hot during the

day, and I never know what to wear.

18

:

Not that I don't love the weather,

nothing makes me happier than cool.

19

:

Crisp mornings that tell me I've

almost survived the heat of summer.

20

:

But personally, I've started referring

to the equinoxes, both the spring

21

:

and the fall as the tipping points.

22

:

The light has been changing since the

last solstice, but it isn't until the

23

:

Equinox that the balance completely

tips towards the opposite extreme

24

:

of light or dark as the case may be.

25

:

To me, this idea explains why I feel

a bit off balance this time of year.

26

:

The light is tipping.

27

:

What's in balance about that?

28

:

But all this tipping and balance

stuff aside, the seasons are

29

:

changing, which means it's time for

my fall celebration of Jesus Christ.

30

:

And I have chosen the September Equinox as

the perfect place to pin that celebration.

31

:

If you are new to this podcast, you

might be wondering why a Christian

32

:

would be celebrating the Equinox.

33

:

Here is my answer.

34

:

In an effort to live closer to nature,

to live more seasonally, and through this

35

:

endeavor to grow closer to Jesus Christ,

I decided I wanted to have my own personal

36

:

celebration of Christ in every season.

37

:

I played around with centering my

celebrations on different holidays already

38

:

in place, but in the end, I settled on the

spring and fall equinoxes and the summer

39

:

and winter solstice as great times to

celebrate Jesus Christ in every season.

40

:

I mean, they were there and felt

unused, at least in my life.

41

:

So they became the perfect dates.

42

:

For me, I love the idea of celebrating

Jesus Christ by following the light

43

:

around the seasons of the year.

44

:

This goes right along with Alma

30 verse nine, which says, all

45

:

things denote there is a God, yay.

46

:

Even the earth and all things

that are upon the face of it.

47

:

Yay.

48

:

And its motions.

49

:

Yay.

50

:

And also, all the planets which move

in their regular form do witness

51

:

that there is a supreme creator.

52

:

So welcome to the episode where I talk

about my fall celebration of Jesus Christ.

53

:

On the day I am posting this episode, the

Equinox is still two weeks away Because

54

:

I post biweekly, I could have either

posted it today or in two weeks, which

55

:

would have been the day of the Equinox.

56

:

I chose to post it early just

in case you are interested in

57

:

having your own celebration and

would like some time to plan.

58

:

Now as a way to design how and where I

celebrate this year, I have chosen to

59

:

follow the seasons of the life of Christ

as I move through the seasons of the year.

60

:

With the spring equinox,

I focused on his youth.

61

:

For the summer solstice, I focused

on the start of his ministry.

62

:

And for the fall equinox, I want to

focus on the last week of his life.

63

:

Can you see how the rhythmic patterns

of the seasons and the natural flow

64

:

of life follow a similar configuration

from beginning, middle, and to the end?

65

:

I think it's beautiful to see

how these patterns replicate.

66

:

Now, as a quick aside, I have to

point out that in South Africa,

67

:

they are heading into spring,

glorious, bright, lovely spring,

68

:

Obviously because they are in the

Southern hemisphere, all of their

69

:

holidays are backwards from mine.

70

:

Christmas is in the summer

instead of the winter.

71

:

Easter comes in the fall

instead of the spring.

72

:

So while my seasonal timeline of Christ's

life doesn't work out in the Southern

73

:

Hemisphere, at least not while using

a World calendar, I had the thought

74

:

of, wow, this would be an excellent

opportunity for my South African

75

:

friends to celebrate the life of Jesus

Christ in the spring for a change.

76

:

Because the World Calendar always has

them celebrating Easter in the fall.

77

:

so I hope this invitation

is inspiring for everyone.

78

:

No matter where in the world you reside,

just modify it so that it works for you.

79

:

For me, here in the Northern

Hemisphere, I am heading into

80

:

fall, a natural time for endings.

81

:

So for my Fall Equinox celebration

of Jesus Christ, I want to focus

82

:

on the last week of his life.

83

:

Since we know quite a few things

about this last week, I have

84

:

lots of things to choose from.

85

:

And of course, because this

is my celebration, I am going

86

:

to pick my favorite things.

87

:

On the spring Equinox, I chose to attend

my local temple, an hour and a half drive

88

:

from my house, and I camped out so I

could easily attend two days of sessions.

89

:

I imagined this would be like the

young Jesus and his family camping

90

:

outside the walls of Jerusalem

when they went to the temple.

91

:

Now we know that Jesus also went to the

temple during the last week of his life.

92

:

And while I am planning a temple

visit sometime during the Equinox

93

:

week, I have been thinking that on

the day of the Equinox I would like

94

:

to go to a different kind of temple.

95

:

In fact, I have decided I will

hike to the top of a mountain.

96

:

Throughout the scriptures,

prophets have sought mountaintops

97

:

as a place to commune with God.

98

:

Think Moses Nephi and Enoch.

99

:

There is something about mountains

and temples that just go together.

100

:

Here is a thought about temples

and mountains that I just recently

101

:

learned from Jack Logan and her

podcast titled The Ancient Tradition.

102

:

Let me attempt to explain.

103

:

If you are familiar with the Israelite

temple, you will know that it had an

104

:

outside wall, then an inner building,

and inside that the Holy of Holies,

105

:

there were three different layers.

106

:

Jack Logan explains that based

on this formula, that Garden

107

:

of Eden was a type of temple.

108

:

Isn't that cool?

109

:

This comes directly from the scriptures.

110

:

Let me read Genesis two eight.

111

:

It says, and the Lord God planted

a garden eastward in Eden.

112

:

If you read this carefully, you will

see that in the eastern portion of

113

:

Eden, the Lord planted a garden.

114

:

This area called Eden would be

like the area just inside the

115

:

walls of the temple, and the garden

would be like the inner building.

116

:

And then in verse nine, it talks

about the tree of life being in

117

:

the midst or middle of the garden.

118

:

That would be the central

point or the Holy of Holies.

119

:

So there you have it all.

120

:

The elements of a temple that would

make the Garden of Eden the first

121

:

temple ever built on this earth.

122

:

Now, here is the part I love, and

this is where the mountain comes in.

123

:

Listen carefully.

124

:

Genesis two 10 says, and a river

went out of Eden to water the garden,

125

:

and from fence, it was parted.

126

:

It became foreheads.

127

:

Did you hear the mountain part?

128

:

I know it's a little tricky, but if a

river were going to run in four different

129

:

directions, it's likely the Garden of

Eden was at the top of a mountain, or

130

:

at least a hill of some kind, right?

131

:

So that the water could run forth.

132

:

Do you love that?

133

:

I love to imagine the Garden of

Eden, the first temple on earth

134

:

as being at the top of a mountain.

135

:

To me, an alpine mountaintop is one of

the most beautiful places in the world.

136

:

If you would like more information

about this idea, I will include

137

:

a link to the Ancient Traditions

Podcast in the show notes.

138

:

Now there is another reason

to celebrate in the mountains.

139

:

Listen to what Nephi says in one

Nephi 18, three, and it came to pass

140

:

that I Nephi went unto the Mount

oft and did pray oft unto the Lord.

141

:

Wherefore, the Lord showed

unto me great things.

142

:

I love that.

143

:

I love knowing that Nephi chose to pray

to God in the mountains and that it was

144

:

there, that God showed him great things.

145

:

Now, obviously, I am nothing like

Nephi, but in my own way, I want to

146

:

pray at the top of my mountain and

hope to be open to revelation there.

147

:

Let me share with you this verse that

explains some of my feelings about

148

:

hiking to the top of a mountain.

149

:

This is titled Why She Climbed.

150

:

The Woman Climbed Mountains

not to conquer, but to

151

:

confer with ancient wisdom.

152

:

She climbed to rust with the wind, push

her body beyond the ache in her heart,

153

:

face the rain with grace and forgiveness.

154

:

She climbed to receive instruction

from the silence of the trees.

155

:

Revelation from the cries of a hawk.

156

:

She climbed to rest among the folds

of the earth to sit in temples

157

:

older than time to place the

soles of her feet in holy places.

158

:

Here she prayed without words

saying, without shame, rejoiced

159

:

beneath the eyes of her God.

160

:

She climbed not to escape, but to

return home to the clouds, home

161

:

to where stars could surround her.

162

:

She climbed to remember.

163

:

She climbed to become, she climbed to

hear the mountains whisper her name.

164

:

So that is my plan for my fall

Equinox celebration of Jesus Christ.

165

:

I am going to climb to the

top of a mountain with the

166

:

hope of communing with my God.

167

:

Now, there is another element

from the final week of Christ's

168

:

life that I want to include.

169

:

One of my favorite parts is Christ

Triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

170

:

You know what I'm talking about?

171

:

It's the part where all the people were

so excited to see him that they laid

172

:

down palm branches and shouted, Hosanna.

173

:

I've really come to love

the word hosanna or hosana.

174

:

If I attempt the Hebrew pronunciation,

The original meaning of this word

175

:

was a plea for salvation, a desperate

cry for help during a time of

176

:

war, famine, or national danger.

177

:

And when you break down the word, the hose

part means save or deliver, and the NA

178

:

part is an ENT treaty or a polite request

In English, we translate it as please.

179

:

I love to focus on that ending part.

180

:

Na na.

181

:

It's almost like I can

feel the word in my heart.

182

:

Na, please.

183

:

That sacred request is beautiful.

184

:

In fact, I have started using

the word ANA as a mantra in my

185

:

meditation, and I really like it.

186

:

the three syllables are easy

to say in my mind as I breathe.

187

:

So think about trying it and maybe

Judy will create us a JOA meditation.

188

:

Now calling out Hosanna to

the Lord is something that is

189

:

still done in Jewish culture.

190

:

most notably during one of their

festivals known as the Feast of the

191

:

Tabernacles, which coincidentally is

celebrated in late September or early

192

:

October, depending on the Jewish calendar.

193

:

Which I find conveniently

close to the September equinox.

194

:

But back to Christ's triumphal entry

here is something I find interesting.

195

:

When the people were crying hosana, they

were using it more like a praise word,

196

:

like shouting hail to the king, Thus in

our modern Christian context, the word

197

:

hosanna is more a shout of praise or

acclimation than a cry for help, which

198

:

is another beautiful way to use the word.

199

:

In the Church of Jesus Christ of

Latter Day Saints, we have a sacred

200

:

ceremony called the Hosanna Shout.

201

:

Honestly, I don't know if in this context

we are using the word Hosanna more as a

202

:

plea for help or as a shout of praise.

203

:

The reality is, I don't know if the

distinction matters all that much, but

204

:

if I had to hazard a guess, I would say

we use the word more as a shout of praise

205

:

than as a plea for salvation to shout.

206

:

The word just seems to

me more like praise.

207

:

When I say it slowly to myself

as I meditate, that's when

208

:

it feels more like a plea.

209

:

Now, there is one place where I feel

like the word is naturally used both

210

:

as a plea and praise, and that is

when the word is used in a song.

211

:

There are lots of Jewish and

Catholic and other Christian songs

212

:

that chant or sing the word hona or

hosanna, however you want to say it.

213

:

Let me share with you a clip I stole

from the Mormon channel studio now

214

:

called the Saints Channel Studio.

215

:

This line is sung by Aubrey Liz and

is from the hymn with Wondering Awe.

216

:

I will include a link to the whole song

in the show notes, but listen to this.

217

:

Isn't that beautiful?

218

:

I know it's short, so

let me play it again.

219

:

O how I wish I could sing when

I get to the top of my mountain.

220

:

And I know I could, but, uh, Not being

that musically inclined as part of my

221

:

celebration of Jesus Christ, I have

decided that when I reach the top

222

:

of my mountain, I am going to shout

Hosanna and I am going to do it with

223

:

all the joy and fervor I can muster.

224

:

I mean, why not?

225

:

This is my celebration after all.

226

:

And while I am shouting, I

am going to imagine that I am

227

:

praising God with all creation.

228

:

because we know of course,

that everything, every flower,

229

:

every river, every mountain is

in a constant state of praise.

230

:

Listen to this verse from

Doctrine and Covenants 1 28.

231

:

Let the earth break forth in singing.

232

:

Let the mountains shout for joy

and all ye valleys cry aloud

233

:

and all ye sees and dry lands.

234

:

Tell the wonder of your eternal

king and je rivers and ye brooks

235

:

and reels flow down with gladness.

236

:

Let the woods and all the trees

of the field praise the Lord.

237

:

And these solid rocks weep for joy.

238

:

Let the sun, moon and the morning

stars sing together and let all

239

:

the sons of God shout for joy.

240

:

So there you have it all.

241

:

The makings of a wonderful Equinox,

celebration of Jesus Christ.

242

:

253

:

Let me close with a quote from Jeffrey R.

254

:

Holland.

255

:

He said.

256

:

We rejoice with the angels who

shouted, Hosanna as Jesus entered

257

:

Jerusalem, and we too can shout

Hosanna in our hearts as we follow him.

258

:

Namaste.

Creative Spiritual Journey
one small, deliberate step at a time
We are all on a journey—a journey home to our heavenly parents. Any experienced traveler knows there are days you laugh and days you cry.

We aren’t here to tell you how to live—we are here to share how we live—how we survive, thrive, and even find joy!

The journey gets messy with rainstorms and sleepless flights but the hard times—the miserable times—those make the best stories.

And the vistas, the sunsets, the little birds outside the window—those are the reminders that God is in the details, he is aware of us, he has trod the path before.

The Creative Spiritual Journey Podcast is hosted by Judy and Ghia Cooley—two sisters in their wisdom years—who love the savior and are dedicated to making this journey one small, deliberate step at a time.
