Otherwise - A Christmas Story

Otherwise – A Christmas Story by Ghia Cooley

Transcript
Speaker:

Hello, Merry Christmas.

2

:

This is Ghia with the creative,

spiritual journey podcast.

3

:

And I am here with a second bonus episode.

4

:

This is not our usual content.

5

:

So if you are new here, please check

out one of our other episodes to

6

:

see what our podcast is all about.

7

:

Weeks ago, I put out a

podcast called where is CoLab?

8

:

You may recall that in this

episode I mentioned the Wiseman.

9

:

And I wondered if any of them

doubted their decision to

10

:

make the journey to Bethlehem.

11

:

The story I want to share with you today.

12

:

I came out of my musings on this question.

13

:

Otherwise.

14

:

Uh, by Ghia Cooley, the villagers

called my U-Mass the wise man,

15

:

because he caught the best fish by

watching the moon and the stars.

16

:

This I knew when I married him

and I was pleased with the match.

17

:

Think of my surprise when

I learned of his visions.

18

:

Um, uh, You should have told me,

your son saw messengers from God.

19

:

She only laughed.

20

:

You were the best of all the

girls at washing for gold.

21

:

I wanted you in my family.

22

:

This was true.

23

:

For generations, my women had

worked on the banks of the river.

24

:

And it was said we had the golden touch.

25

:

But just because I was part of

Alma's household didn't mean she

26

:

got all the fruits of my labor.

27

:

When I had a particularly good day, I

saved a pinch of gold for myself and put

28

:

it in a small pouch under my mattress.

29

:

When the pouch was plump.

30

:

Ooh, mash and I would build our

own home and fill it with babies.

31

:

Afraid U-Mass would be

distracted from our goals.

32

:

I begged him not to tell

a soul about his visions.

33

:

Where's your faith.

34

:

He asked, this is excellent.

35

:

Glorious news.

36

:

I must tell everyone.

37

:

And he did.

38

:

After that I watched alone

at the riverbank for weeks.

39

:

It was only because I found the

best black sand that the other

40

:

women sought me out once more.

41

:

Still I heard they're

mocking words behind my back.

42

:

Nisha's wise, man believes the new start

will announce their arrival of a king.

43

:

There were giggles.

44

:

Yes.

45

:

And he intends to follow the

star until he finds this king.

46

:

I rolled my eyes.

47

:

It didn't matter what they thought.

48

:

But they had said one

thing that troubled me.

49

:

It was the words he

intends to follow the star.

50

:

U-Mass was in the yard, mending his nets.

51

:

When I got home before

he could wish me welcome.

52

:

I threw down my gold

washing boards and blurted.

53

:

Tell me you don't intend

to follow that star.

54

:

I could see by the look on his face.

55

:

It was true.

56

:

But what about me and the babes?

57

:

I cried.

58

:

He reached for me, but I ran to our

room and threw myself on the bed.

59

:

I didn't come down for dinner.

60

:

When U-Mass came up, he stroked my head.

61

:

It will be, well, my love have no worries.

62

:

I wanted to believe him.

63

:

I wanted his faith.

64

:

So I said nothing more still.

65

:

I lamented what would

become of our family.

66

:

But as the moons came and went and the

pouch under my mattress got fatter.

67

:

My belly stayed flat.

68

:

Slowly with time.

69

:

My dreams of children's slipped away.

70

:

And I became resentful of the child.

71

:

U-Mass awaited.

72

:

He insisted I alone was

enough to fill his life.

73

:

But was I.

74

:

Every night he watched for the star.

75

:

And I wondered who was more

important me or his king.

76

:

Come in, I would tide your eyes

will grow dim with your searching.

77

:

You don't mind my watching the

heavens when I catch the best

78

:

fish, he said with a grin.

79

:

He was right, but I

wouldn't admit the truth.

80

:

The seasons began to pass more quickly.

81

:

My dark hair grade at the temples.

82

:

We performed the sky burial for

Arma and the house became mine,

83

:

but it was too quiet to enjoy.

84

:

It was during the moon of melting ice that

I heard a fervent call Nisha come quick.

85

:

Sure something was a miss.

86

:

I rushed to the yard.

87

:

The light was dazzling and I knew

instantly the star had arrived.

88

:

Not even my fist held before

my face could block it.

89

:

Silver light.

90

:

Ooh, mash hugged me in his excitement.

91

:

The king has come.

92

:

He said the baby has been born.

93

:

His eyes glittered with joy.

94

:

I was stunned.

95

:

The star had actually appeared.

96

:

It was true then had I

been a fool not to believe.

97

:

On impulse.

98

:

I grab U-Mass by his shoulders.

99

:

I'm going with you.

100

:

I said some of the joy

left his face, Nisha.

101

:

I always believed I would have

the rupee to make the journey.

102

:

He held out his hands.

103

:

The day has come and I am

still a poor fishermen.

104

:

Ooh, Matt.

105

:

I want to see that baby.

106

:

I made the next decision quickly.

107

:

We will sell the house.

108

:

And we did.

109

:

It was easy.

110

:

Some of the village women

thought I was crazy.

111

:

Others gave me pinches of gold.

112

:

For the king, they would say.

113

:

I sowed their gold along with my own, into

a strip of red fabric and slipped it into

114

:

the embroidered waistband of my skirt.

115

:

U-Mass bought two mules and

loaded them with supplies.

116

:

He wanted to leave immediately

navigating by the star.

117

:

But I convinced him to wait for

the yearly Trek of the rug traders.

118

:

When they arrived, we

joined their caravan.

119

:

As was tradition, the village women

place a dot of butter between my brows.

120

:

And tied a white scarf around

my neck for safe travels.

121

:

I walked with a sack on my back, held

in place with a band across my forehead.

122

:

I was the only female in the group and

Stoli missed the chatter of other women.

123

:

In my loneliness.

124

:

I began to question my decision.

125

:

Could I make this journey?

126

:

Was there truly a king?

127

:

Eventually we reached a Reddit and muddy

road where we joined other merchants.

128

:

There were different eyes, different

languages, different clothing, as well as

129

:

trains of mules, donkeys, and even yaks.

130

:

Overwhelmed.

131

:

I hid behind U-Mass and barely

spoke until I noticed him.

132

:

I rang the appalling form of a camel.

133

:

We will not have one.

134

:

I declared our mules are good.

135

:

They will make the journey.

136

:

But my love Ooma SJ.

137

:

I said gently.

138

:

If we want to follow the star,

we must trade for a camel.

139

:

This was the same day.

140

:

Our fellow rug travelers made

their trades and headed home.

141

:

I cried as they left.

142

:

What had I done?

143

:

I stood despondent as we traded my lapis

ring and necklace for more supplies

144

:

and strap them to our new camel.

145

:

He was kneeling.

146

:

When I whispered in his

ear, please be agreeable.

147

:

The camel blinked his long lashes

and continued to, to his cud.

148

:

But I think he understood because he

never spit when I was close and he seemed

149

:

to enjoy my padding, his soft nose.

150

:

U-Mass learned just enough Turkic

to speak to the other traders.

151

:

I could only gesture.

152

:

The road was long and the travel hard.

153

:

There were days with little

food or water and nights

154

:

fraught with bandits and tigers.

155

:

On occasion, we stayed in caravan series.

156

:

Which hosted the safety of wild

courtyards and the luxury of

157

:

easy water for our animals.

158

:

Here.

159

:

There was lots of talk.

160

:

And of course, everyone noted the star.

161

:

Especially U-Mass.

162

:

One night.

163

:

He woke me.

164

:

Nisha.

165

:

There are more of us, others

who have been watching the star

166

:

and are now seeking the king.

167

:

I was astonished.

168

:

More Wiseman.

169

:

Was it true then?

170

:

Would we actually find a king?

171

:

Ooh, mesh and I joined in a

caravan with these wise travelers.

172

:

The comradery bolstered my faith.

173

:

Slowly.

174

:

I began to understand.

175

:

The king wasn't here to rule over us.

176

:

He was here to reclaim us, to redeem us.

177

:

To change our hearts and

to one day, take us home.

178

:

In time, we followed the star

to the strange country of Judea.

179

:

Ooh, mash was certain.

180

:

We were close.

181

:

It seemed reasonable to inquire

at the palace of king Herod.

182

:

Feeling my clothes to travel

warranty to be presentable.

183

:

I chose to wait outside.

184

:

For U-Mass.

185

:

I found a bizarre and purchased a

silk shirt and great blooming pants.

186

:

I thought him handsome as he went

off to inquire after our young king.

187

:

Uh, last art king was not to be found.

188

:

What was found was a prediction that

the king of Kings would be born in

189

:

a small village called Bethlehem.

190

:

We resolved to visit this

village the following day.

191

:

That night U-Mass.

192

:

Woke distressed.

193

:

I knew the look.

194

:

He had seen another vision.

195

:

Visiting the palace was a mistake.

196

:

He lamented Harriet has no

desire to worship our king.

197

:

He only wishes to protect his throne.

198

:

Then it's symbol.

199

:

I said, you will tell Herod

nothing of what we find.

200

:

Ooh, mash side in relief.

201

:

When did you become so wise?

202

:

I snorted.

203

:

I'm not wise.

204

:

I have doubted this whole venture.

205

:

U-Mass chuckled.

206

:

Than perhaps my love.

207

:

You are otherwise.

208

:

Long after U-Mass had

drifted back to sleep.

209

:

I lay awake thinking about this term.

210

:

Otherwise.

211

:

Was it true?

212

:

Was my wisdom merely different than that.

213

:

Of U-Mass.

214

:

I was here wasn't I.

215

:

I wanted to worship the king.

216

:

I had become more confident,

more faith-filled.

217

:

Despite my weakness would this king sense?

218

:

My desire to believe.

219

:

It was nightfall before we reached

the outskirts of Bethlehem.

220

:

Here U-Mass was able to inquire

of a shepherd about the babe.

221

:

The separate eagerly directed

us to a simple stone cottage.

222

:

At the door, a lovely, bright eyed

woman appeared as if expecting us.

223

:

I thought her the age of

my great-granddaughter.

224

:

If I had had one.

225

:

Ooh, mash explained our search.

226

:

The woman smiled and

motion for us to wait.

227

:

Ooh, mash winked at my nervousness as

our band gathered in the courtyard.

228

:

Soon, the woman returned with a

child and set him on the ground.

229

:

We all kneeled.

230

:

The young boy look shyly at the

Intrepid travelers before him.

231

:

Then his eyes landed on me.

232

:

I held my breath as he tottered

forward, holding up his arms.

233

:

I glanced at his mother for

approval before standing and

234

:

scooping him into my arms.

235

:

I have held many, a niece and nephew.

236

:

I have sung to them

and rock them to sleep.

237

:

But this, this was different.

238

:

My heart saying to have him in my

arms and I felt my doubts slip away.

239

:

This was my king.

240

:

I brushed my cheek across the top of

his head and struggled not to cry.

241

:

After a moment.

242

:

I dropped to the ground, my old

skirt billowing out around me.

243

:

With the child still on my lap,

I loosened my waistband and

244

:

drew out the strip of red cloth.

245

:

After tying the two ends together.

246

:

I slipped the cloth, like a

necklace over his little head.

247

:

He touched it gently with that

fingers and gave me a sweet smile.

248

:

I was flooded with relief.

249

:

He had accepted my gift.

250

:

And more importantly, he had accepted me.

251

:

We stayed in the village for three days.

252

:

It was a short visit considering

the length of the journey.

253

:

But U-Mass insisted it wasn't safe.

254

:

And perhaps we had

stayed too long already.

255

:

When we left, I could still

feel the soft hair on my cheek.

256

:

And I knew.

257

:

I knew as foretold by the profits that

my little king would fulfill his mission.

258

:

He would sacrifice his life for all the

inhabitants of this earth and beyond.

259

:

And because of him, I would live again.

260

:

And one eternal day.

261

:

Even, I would become an Alma.

About the Podcast

Creative Spiritual Journey
one small, deliberate step at a time
We are all on a journey—a journey home to our heavenly parents. Any experienced traveler knows there are days you laugh and days you cry.

We aren’t here to tell you how to live—we are here to share how we live—how we survive, thrive, and even find joy!

The journey gets messy with rainstorms and sleepless flights but the hard times—the miserable times—those make the best stories.

And the vistas, the sunsets, the little birds outside the window—those are the reminders that God is in the details, he is aware of us, he has trod the path before.

The Creative Spiritual Journey Podcast is hosted by Judy and Ghia Cooley—two sisters in their wisdom years—who love the savior and are dedicated to making this journey one small, deliberate step at a time.
