Yeti X:

Welcome friends to the Creative Spiritual Journey podcast,

2

:

Sonny Bonani from South Africa.

3

:

It's here that my husband and I are

serving a mission for the Church of

4

:

Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints.

5

:

My name is Judy Cooley, and together

with my sister-in-law, GIA Cooley,

6

:

we are your host, but we'd rather you

consider us more like hiking buddies.

7

:

So together we will step out our

front door and onto the path that

8

:

leads through the wilderness beyond

the horizon to stand on mountaintops.

9

:

We will share what's in our hearts,

our love for the savior and his

10

:

beautiful creations, as well as

the joys and the lessons that we

11

:

are discovering along the way.

12

:

So will you rise up, shake off

the dust, pick up your packs,

13

:

and join us on the trail.

14

:

It's gonna be a beautiful day.

15

:

Today is day 455.

16

:

We started counting down

nd,:

17

:

And did you know that the total

days we'll be serving is 700?

18

:

Well, maybe.

19

:

It might be 800.

20

:

We have really thought long

and hard on this decision.

21

:

It hasn't been easy and has kept me

up at night wrestling with it, and it

22

:

most definitely doesn't make any sense.

23

:

We are 100% sure our family is

not going to be happy about this.

24

:

Many of you will think we are crazy,

and a year ago, there's no way

25

:

this would even be a consideration.

26

:

We've gone back and forth, made pros

and cons lists, but with new mission

27

:

leaders coming into our mission in

July, There will only be two senior

28

:

missionaries that will remain.

29

:

And so you know how sometimes

missionaries request to extend

30

:

their missions by a few weeks.

31

:

Or months, which would be very helpful.

32

:

Plus the number of senior

missionaries being called to our

33

:

mission has slowed down greatly.

34

:

We guess the RAs band wave has passed.

35

:

There's definitely a huge need for more

senior missionaries all around the world.

36

:

So I'm announcing on this podcast

that we have decided to say yes.

37

:

Yes to having a happy April Fool's Day.

38

:

I'm sorry, did I get you?

39

:

Maybe just a little bit.

40

:

Those of you who know me probably

looked at the date and already

41

:

had your radar up and not gonna

buy a single thing I say today.

42

:

Today's April 1st.

43

:

I have a great love for April Fools.

44

:

It began when I was a young girl.

45

:

Oh.

46

:

Just so you're wondering, we're

still only staying 700 days.

47

:

I remember my first grade teacher

announced, there wasn't lunch so we had

48

:

to go home and I was so upset because, I

was a latchkey kid, which means my parents

49

:

were at work and I was gonna go home.

50

:

To myself, and I was really bummed.

51

:

I loved school.

52

:

but as a little kid, my imagination

for pranks hadn't matured yet.

53

:

That part of my brain fired up

after marriage and having children.

54

:

One time I made pancakes with wax

paper in them, and our youngest

55

:

son was really little, and for, oh.

56

:

Months and months after, whenever

I'd say, do you want pancakes?

57

:

And he'd say, yeah, but not those

ones with the paper in the middle.

58

:

One morning I jumped up while Eric

was in the shower and took our

59

:

old crappy Volkswagen rabbit car

around the corner and jumped back

60

:

in bed as like I was asleep and he

thought someone had stolen the car.

61

:

One morning our family woke up

to a for sale sign by owner.

62

:

Out in front of her house, and I

even got the neighbors on that one.

63

:

I put, it's a baby boy announcements,

balloons and banner out on the

64

:

front lawn of my best friend.

65

:

But then I've had some

April fool's backfire on me.

66

:

One of our sons thought it would be really

funny to put baby powder in my blow dryer.

67

:

A rubber band around the kitchen,

sink, hand, squirter, and oh, there was

68

:

something else in the shower, I was in a

hurry that morning, which made me late.

69

:

And I also have a best

friend who is single,

70

:

Yeti X-7: And I came across this

ginormous trophy at, a secondhand

71

:

store and a bunch of golf clubs, and

I stuck 'em in her lawn and the trophy

72

:

on the doorstep and wasn't quite sure,

wow, what am I gonna do with this?

73

:

A trophy for what?

74

:

And her son recommended

the Lonely Hearts Club.

75

:

And so she won.

76

:

Second place, For the Lonely Hearts Club.

77

:

Well, this backfired on me.

78

:

It hurt her feelings, and I felt horrible.

79

:

Yeti X: So my April fools

was carried to foolishness.

80

:

And so I have to admit, I've

toned down my April Fools,

81

:

Yeti X-19: In preparing for April Fools

in this episode, I've done a lot of

82

:

deep diving into this word foolishness

and, what it means to be foolish.

83

:

Yeti X-20: Course foolishness in the

scriptures you come up with, , the foolish

84

:

man who built his house upon the sand,

the foolish virgins that showed up at the

85

:

wedding party with no oil in their lamp.

86

:

There's oh, the foolishness of man.

87

:

That think they are wise.

88

:

the foolishness of following blind guides.

89

:

But I wanna begin this episode

with, I think is one of my favorite

90

:

scriptures found in Alma 37 verse six.

91

:

Notice the word foolishness.

92

:

Yeti X-21: And of course the backdrop to

this scripture Is Alma speaking to his son

93

:

Heman, giving him some fatherly advice?

94

:

And I think it's great

advice for us as well.

95

:

So this is Alma 37 verse six.

96

:

And now you suppose that

this is foolishness in me.

97

:

But behold, I say unto you that by

small and simple things are great things

98

:

brought to pass, and the small means in

many instances does confound the wise.

99

:

Yeti X-22: Gee.

100

:

And I did our creative coaching

certification together, from

101

:

Brooke Snow's program.

102

:

And I'll tell you the biggest takeaway for

me was this daily small steps of becoming.

103

:

A lot of us think of goals as a to-do

list, where it's more of a becoming

104

:

of living in our true identity.

105

:

fulfilling the measure of your creation,

becoming who you are born to become.

106

:

I, I don't know if you've ever read

the book by James Claire Atomic Habits.

107

:

This is how he states it.

108

:

That your identity emerges

out of your habits.

109

:

In fact, the word identity was

originally derived from the Latin words,

110

:

which means being.

111

:

Indented.

112

:

Indented, Oh golly.

113

:

Don't know.

114

:

My Latin, Indented,

which means repeatedly.

115

:

So Your identity is literally your

repeated beingness, so whatever

116

:

your identity is right now.

117

:

You only believe it because

you have proof of it.

118

:

If you go to church every Sunday

for the past 20 years, you have the

119

:

evidence that you are religious.

120

:

If you study, for one hour every night,

you have evidence that you are studious.

121

:

If you go to the gym and you

work out, even when it's storming

122

:

outside, you have evidence that

you are committed to fitness.

123

:

The more evidence you have for a belief,

the more strongly you believe it.

124

:

The first step is not

what or how, but who.

125

:

do we want to become?

126

:

Ultimately, your habits matter

because they help you become the

127

:

type of person you wish to be.

128

:

identity is the north

star of habit change.

129

:

Now, I miss the North Star.

130

:

I live down now in the southern hemisphere

where we have the Southern Cross.

131

:

Same concept.

132

:

It is constant.

133

:

It is steady for direction.

134

:

They are the channel through

which you develop your deepest

135

:

beliefs about yourself.

136

:

So quite literally, you become

your habits this beingness.

137

:

So when I read that, it

reminded me of preach my gospel.

138

:

Now preach.

139

:

My gospel is written for the

young missionary, and so it's

140

:

been really interesting to

read it as a senior missionary

141

:

Yeti X-24: We have some pretty ingrained

142

:

Yeti X-22: habits.

143

:

a lifetime,

144

:

Yeti X-24: repeated beingness, wouldn't

you think after all these years and

145

:

we carry with us on this mission, so

many experiences in our mind and in

146

:

our heart, and it can be kind of rocky.

147

:

There are times I am definitely

foolish more than I am wise,

148

:

Yeti X-35: Let me give you a quick

example, and I find this, when I

149

:

take time to really study, ask a

question, read in the scriptures,

150

:

as well as in preach my gospel

151

:

And, um, in my patriarchal blessing,

This is what this Holy Ghost does for us.

152

:

teaches us in this becoming.

153

:

So my question was.

154

:

of course, how can I be

more like the savior?

155

:

And that day in preach my gospel was

156

:

Yeti X-36: The attribute of humility,

and this is what Peach my gospel

157

:

said, the opposite of humility is

pride, and to be prideful means to

158

:

put greater trust in oneself than God.

159

:

It also means to put the things of

the world above the things of God.

160

:

Pride is competitive.

161

:

Those who are prideful seek to have more

and presume they are better than others.

162

:

Pride is a great stumbling block.

163

:

Pride is one of my great stumbling blocks.

164

:

And then I ask myself, how can

I recognize pride in myself?

165

:

Yeti X-38: And so what would

a humble person do each day?

166

:

How would a humble person

approach missionary work?

167

:

How would a humble person

treat their spouse?

168

:

How would a humble person

talk to their neighbor?

169

:

So I'm becoming humble by asking me

that simple question throughout the day.

170

:

How would a humble person handle this?

171

:

Yeti X-35: Oh Spirit will help you

get on your knees and ask for help.

172

:

Where do I need to improve?

173

:

Yeti X-23: In hopes of making the changes

that I need to change daily to become

174

:

more like the savior and to fulfill

the measure of my creation, and not

175

:

just here on mission, but throughout.

176

:

E turn it.

177

:

This is an eternal progress,

178

:

' Yeti X-22: cause

179

:

The Savior has called you to

some work, not just me out on the

180

:

mission, but you also have a work

and he invites us to follow him.

181

:

What manner of man or

woman ought you to be?

182

:

He asked Verily I say

unto you, even as I am.

183

:

Elder Holland said, the Lord blesses

those who want to improve, who accept

184

:

the need for commandments and try

to keep them who cherish Christlike

185

:

virtue and strive to the best of

their ability to acquire them.

186

:

If you stumble in that

pursuit, so does everyone.

187

:

The Savior is there to help you.

188

:

Keep going.

189

:

Soon enough, you will

have the success you seek.

190

:

, Yeti X-29: we need to ask ourselves,

what do we wanna stand for?

191

:

What are our principles and our values?

192

:

Yeti X-30: Once we've decided this type

of person, we wanna be like Christ.

193

:

Then we do the daily things

to prove to ourself with small

194

:

wins that we're like him.

195

:

We change bit by bit, day

by day, habit by habit.

196

:

We are continually

undergoing what is called

197

:

Yeti X-39: A micro evolution of self.

198

:

We say, Hey, maybe this

is who I really am.

199

:

And we continue to show

up in our true identity.

200

:

And the reason we celebrate the wins

is because he makes us feel good.

201

:

And when we feel good, we do more good.

202

:

Is that such a thing more good?

203

:

It's like more better, but when

we feel good, we do better.

204

:

Yeti X-34: Through these values of

integrity and hope and faith and

205

:

charity and diligence and obedience.

206

:

These Christ-like attributes.

207

:

We mesh 'em and merge 'em

into who we are becoming.

208

:

And it's not just spiritual, it's

temporal also being our very best in

209

:

caring for our bodies and caring for our

time and caring for our relationships.

210

:

This becoming.

211

:

Yeti X-22: And I can testify.

212

:

It's by small and simple means

that we create great things.

213

:

I wanna go back to Alma 37 verse six and

look at the footnotes of that scripture.

214

:

Yeti X-21: I'm hoping this doesn't

feel like a Sunday school lesson

215

:

because that's not my intention.

216

:

I just wanna, unravel this

thought of foolishness.

217

:

This is kinda like a scripture.

218

:

Treasure hunt takes us to To doctrine

Covenants 64 verse 33, where for be

219

:

not weary and well-doing for you're

laying the foundation of a great

220

:

work and outta small things proceed.

221

:

A that which is great.

222

:

It is this foundation.

223

:

I wanna share story with you

about, sand the foolish man

224

:

building his house upon the sand.

225

:

We've had the opportunity in.

226

:

Some service projects here.

227

:

Now the homes here are made out of sand

mixed with a cement I am not about to

228

:

tell you how the formula of building

bricks, But I did have the experience

229

:

of painting a wall that had been made

out of this sand and cement mix poorly.

230

:

This reminded me of the man who

built his house upon the sand.

231

:

So as I was rolling the paint on what

was supposedly a primed wall, there were

232

:

patches that as the roller hit the wall.

233

:

all of a sudden I just saw dark sand

on my roller and no paint on the wall.

234

:

I was trying to paint sand.

235

:

Where these places where the mixture,

the formula of building a strong

236

:

foundation with a cement rock mixed

with the sand and water, and getting

237

:

my analogy here, the wise man built

his house upon a rock and the foolish

238

:

man Builds his house upon the sand.

239

:

Yeti X-27: It appears to me that

the foolish man just didn't get

240

:

the formula right of this mixture.

241

:

He missed out on the rock.

242

:

Yeti X-25: So it's foolish to build our

lives, our character, our destiny on sand.

243

:

Those things that crumble and do not last.

244

:

Those small and simple

things are our daily.

245

:

Scripture, study our daily serving

others our daily prayers, our finding.

246

:

Jesus in the temple.

247

:

Finding Jesus in church as

we gather with our friends.

248

:

Partaking of the sacrament and

remembering him is a foundation.

249

:

The small and simple things of

finding your savior, Jesus Christ,

250

:

and becoming more like him wise.

251

:

Not foolish.

252

:

Yeti X-26: So my invitation, I

love leaving you with an invitation

253

:

is to do some self-reflecting.

254

:

Figure out where you are.

255

:

That's where we begin on a map, right?

256

:

Figure out where you are.

257

:

I might suggest you do look in,

preach my gospel in chapter six.

258

:

Under the attributes of Jesus Christ,

there is an attribute evaluation,

259

:

That you rate yourself and see maybe where

you're a little weak, maybe you're being

260

:

a little foolish, and how you can improve

just by beginning with your beingness,

261

:

your identity daily drop by drop.

262

:

Which brings me to the foolish virgins

that showed up without any oil.

263

:

I think maybe they were too

concerned about what they

264

:

were gonna wear to the party.

265

:

I find myself like that.

266

:

Way too often here on mission concerned

about the things of the world that really

267

:

don't matter, instead of focusing on the

oil in the lamps, that what matters most.

268

:

And my promise to you as you take time

to ponder and evaluate this foolishness

269

:

That by small and simple things are great

things brought to pass, my promise is that

270

:

you will discover this beautiful change.

271

:

You'll become more like your savior, which

brings of course, more joy into your life.

272

:

And I wanna finish with just telling

you how awesome I think you are,

273

:

that you show up every day, you

show up and do those hard things.

274

:

It's.

275

:

It's a lot of work becoming like

the savior, but stay cheerful.

276

:

my favorite scripture.

277

:

I see that about every scripture I know.

278

:

In doctrine covenants 1 23, I have this

hanging on my fridge to remind me that

279

:

this is a joyful work therefore, dearly

beloved brethren, let us cheerfully

280

:

do all things that lie in our power,

and then may we stand still with the

281

:

utmost assurance and see the salvation

of God for his arm to be revealed.

282

:

We do that.

283

:

Small and simple.

284

:

And I wanna finish with just telling

you how awesome I think you are,

285

:

that you show up every day, you

show up and do those hard things.

286

:

It's.

287

:

It's a lot of work becoming like

the savior, but stay cheerful.

288

:

Yeti X-31: And Go have some fun today.

289

:

It's April Fools.

290

:

Yeti X-32: I think I will go cook some

pancakes for the elders and maybe they

291

:

might have some wax paper in the center.

292

:

Yeti X-31: If you find wisdom

and joy in this podcast

293

:

Yeti X-2: will you do, gee and I a

great favor, and give us a thumbs up.

294

:

Give us a high rating.

295

:

I don't know how you do that.

296

:

Give us a trophy.

297

:

Share us with a friend

298

:

Yeti X-31: Our goal is to reach.

299

:

Over a hundred of you with this

message of finding joy in the journey.

300

:

Yeti X-2: and I will see you on the trail.

About the Podcast

Creative Spiritual Journey
one small, deliberate step at a time
We are all on a journey—a journey home to our heavenly parents. Any experienced traveler knows there are days you laugh and days you cry.

We aren’t here to tell you how to live—we are here to share how we live—how we survive, thrive, and even find joy!

The journey gets messy with rainstorms and sleepless flights but the hard times—the miserable times—those make the best stories.

And the vistas, the sunsets, the little birds outside the window—those are the reminders that God is in the details, he is aware of us, he has trod the path before.

The Creative Spiritual Journey Podcast is hosted by Judy and Ghia Cooley—two sisters in their wisdom years—who love the savior and are dedicated to making this journey one small, deliberate step at a time.
